(Ohio) Inmates Still Get Roof, But Not Three Meals
Source: WHIO News Radio

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction officials have announced that they will be cutting back on the number of meals that inmates will receive in an effort to save money. The ODRC said they will reduce the number of meals on weekends and holidays from three to two, a move they say will save the state nearly $1.2 million.

The state will no longer serve breakfast on those days, serving only a brunch and dinner at the state's 32 prisons. The savings will come mostly from staffing reductions, but is still only a proverbial drop in the bucket for a department that was told to eliminate $87 million from its budget for 2010.

The brunch plan involves the same amount of food as the three-meal system, and inmates with special dietary needs will still be able to get a morning snack.

1. Years ago prisons had connecting farms and prisoners raised their
own food. My father was offered the job to oversee the one near where I was born. If the WH can raise their own food why not prisoners?

8. then how can someone make money off of it. it should be a mostly
self sustaining place.... prisoners could grow and harvest produce and such.... but there is no money in that for someone, now is there.

17. Ohio Prison Still Have Farms
Quite a few of the prisons in Ohio still have farms. My father worked in one that did. The prisons try to be self-sustaining as much as possible.

The savings comes from need fewer guards to watch during a meal which is a dangerous time in a prison (silverware, trays, etc.) Also, it will save on money preparing the food and washing dishes.

Personally, I think it's just plain cruel to take away the meals.

18. They still do.
Some Ohio prisons still grow vegetables, and they have pig farms for pork.

One consideration is that only minimum security level inmates can work outside the walls.

3. When I was a child, I was always told prisoners were only allowed bread and water
So I suppose brunch and dinner is an improvement on that.

I do think it's a shame we no longer have many county farms in existence. I suppose they weren't profitable.

5. I wonder if they have a prime rib station or a shrimp bowl at the brunch...
seriously, they could reduce costs if they don't overly prosecute young black men in the larger cities...

A kid with a crack pipe from the inner city get busted with a felony and prison time while a white kid in the burbs with a coke vail get a slap on the wrist...

And it's really bad here in Cleveland...

24. Bread and Water
In 1981, while in the Navy, I, ummm, took an "unplanned vacation" and was sentanced to three days bread and water.

And that's exactly what you got. But it was only for a maximum of three days.

Not sure if they have that as a form of discipline in civilian jails, or even if they still have it in the military.

11. I Just Want to Say...
http://www.delanceystreetfoundation.org/

Self-sustaining without taking a dime of taxpayer money, and the recidivism rate is under 25%.

I wrote a review of the San Francisco facility here: http://www.yelp.com/user_details_review_search?userid=1LaZiVIw8Vg_u3xPDgKlAA&q=delancey

(Obviously, this doesn't work for everyone, but on a nationwide scale it sure would help clear up prison overcrowding and underfunding...)

the majority of these prisoners are there on drug related charges...most are just marijuana charges. If they really want to save money, how about legalizing mai juana, setting people free and doing the dang job right.

If they would like to reduce the expense of prisons, they could let some non-violent drug offenders go.

13. Prisons are now big business...and slaves dont need to eat.
This is about as petty as it gets.
If these companies cannot make a profit with their slave labor so much that they have to force people to go without meals..they need to lose their rights to run the prisons.
This is just bullshit.
Even someone in jail is STILL a citizen, still a human being and deserves..at the VERY least to eat while a slave for some big fat corporation.
How low we have come....

20. The prison in question are publicly funded
There aren't people making a ton of money off the Ohio prison system. (I do think there is a private prison in Youngstown, but that's not in question here.)

You are completely correct in your other post. If we released non-violent drug offenders, then the problems with the Ohio Corrections systems would change overnight.

14. cruel and unusual?
Even if the inmates are getting the same amount of food, the idea of losing 2 meals a week sounds harsh to me.
Are the bigwigs who have the big paychecks, nice homes, medical insurance and so on going to give up anything to help the budget get balanced? Are they? Huh? That's what I thought.

My college did too, but I could always go to McDonalds, the student center, or order a pizza. You don't have those options in prison.

And I don't recall ever needing an extra meal on weekend days.

The McDonalds was about a mile and a half walk. The student union cafeteria was closed on weekends (mainly a commuter campus).

I see so many homeless who can afford only one meal a day without committing a crime and prisoners get 3 hot meals, there should be a way to make them deserve it.

...this is not much different that what a typical Sailor will get while underway. Plus, if you work nights, your "dinner", called midrats, is what was left over from the day. I've had hotdog buns, rice, and bug juice for dinner on more than one occasion.
