1. Taft
I don't know anyone who likes or respects Taft. Everyone I know, Democrat or Republican, thinks Taft is an annoying, principle-less little coward. Fortunately, we only have to deal with him for 2 and a half more years, then, hopefully, his sad political career will be over.

It's a shame the Ohio Democratic Party couldn't manager stronger candidates in 1998 and 2002. At least we get another shot in 2006 against someone new. Let's hope we can do better.

2. Why has Ohio's operating budget increased 71% in 10 years?
I know our prison population has increased from 21000 to 42000 since the 1980s (elsewhere I have heard 7000 to 49000 inmates). Medicaid payments for elderly and poor people have gone up. State share of education has gone up a bit, I think that that was enabled by larger tax receipts during the growth years of the 1990s.

The WSJ boogerheads are a bit weasely in this wording:

"Ohio has been more of a spectator than a participant in the country's economic recovery. More than 200,000 jobs have been lost in the past three years, and inflation is above the national average. "

The first sentence is about the recovery--what recovery? The whole country has a jobs deficit. What else should I expect from the partisans from the WSJ?
