Well, Sherrod Brown has announced
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 06:44 PM by OhioBlue
-unofficially-, I guess.... http://www.growohio.org/
I'm not happy with his decision to jump in now, when he already said that he wouldn't run for the Senate seat and threw his support behind Paul Hackett. I'll vote for Hackett in the Primary and would be much more inclined to volunteer for his campaign. I will however support either in the general election. I'm just disappointed in Brown for the way he went about this.

1. I am for Hackett. Brown is being a jerk and will only hurt our chances.

4. I find the Brown announcement on his web site to be sadly pathetic
He uses statements like:
Due to personal and professional obligations, I was unable to enter the race earlier this year...The requests for me to run never abated.

I was honored to accept the call to run statewide.

He claims he consulted National Democratic Leaders and they told him he should run. Who are these leaders? Joe Lieberman? The DLC? Who?
From what I've read most leaders...Reid, Pelosi, Byrd, Boxer, Feingold and Feinstein have already said they look forward to supporting Paul Hackett for Ohio Senator.

He has the right to run, but is it right that he does?

6. I too am disappointed with his announcement.
He seems to be trying to cover his bases b/c he knows people will be angry with his flip flop of running, not running and now running. It looks a lot like he saw the political tide shift in Ohio. He was ready to back Hackett when he thought the Senate seat was a long shot, but now that the GOP is self destructing, he sees an opportunity and is jumping on it. As far as who is backing him... I will defend Brown on the aspect that he is progressive and has been a great Congressman for Ohio. I'm mad at him for the way he went about this decision, but do think his positions are progressive and not DLC. I will vote support Hackett in the primary. I will support the Dem in the general, b/c either is better than DeWine.

5. Brown had the opportunity to announce months ago
I would support Hackett on the sheer fact that he pulled a bait and switch and screwed Hackett over.

7. Maybe the Democratic Party just wants to make sure they run the right
guy-the righter one or the lefter one?

8. I dunno, its strange
I just hope its not an indication that big labor in Ohio is calling the shots. They're notorious for getting involved and screwing up Dem races in Ohio. Not sure why, but they're pretty consistent about it.

Bill Burga (AFL-CIO), who likes to throw his weight around, has a lot of baggage of his own these days, considering he was serving on the Ohio Workmen's Comp board when Noe and other Repub donors were robbing it blind.

Just wait and see and support the Dem candidate is all we can do. I just don't have a good feeling about how these events are unfolding - deja vu.

9. I definetely share
The dissapointment with Brown over his decision. To look on the brightside a little bit it looks like the Dems won't be the only ones with a primary. It looks like former Bob McEwen may challange Dewine.

11. Actually, Sherrod is probably left of Hackett...
But anyway, I have to second OzakDem on this....

Ohio big labor tends ot muck things up by making dmands on the party....

And to a degree, the Dem's have no other choice having come to rely on Big Labor for a rather large chunck of money....

12. We need to wean ourselves away from Big Labor money
It wouldn't be hard and Hackett has already shown money can be raised from Ohio's Dem grassroots. IMHO labor is threatened by this and wants to keep their stranglehold on Dem politics in the state. The idea that big labor is the only place Dems can raise money for races is a myth.

They've brought nothing but failure to us in this state and we're better off without their money if we want to change direction and start winning races instead of losing them.

13. The service unions deserted the AFL-CIO, so you are getting what you want
The SEIU and others who split wanted more money spent on union organizing and less money spent on political campaigns. I don't see how this helps the Democratic Party ultimately..

14. SEIU loves to put feet on the ground.....
For candidates..... They would rather send 150 people out to walk door to door than cut a check for 2,000.00, for instance....

Big Labor, would rather vut a check...

So, it is tha fault of the demcrats for not cultivating other areas of fund raising and depending, for so many years, on labor money....

15. I'll have to watch for that
Then the SEIU could be quite useful.

16. I remember they put about 250 people on the ground
two weekends in a row for the party ticket in 1998 and 2000...

They also were running phone banks...

I'm not sure what they did in 02 or 04 becuase I was no longer an officer in the Dem Party at that time as was dealing with health issues...
