BWC critic plans run for attorney general

Sunday, November 13, 2005

-- State Sen. Marc Dann, the most vocal critic of a mushrooming Statehouse investment scandal, hopes to grab a bigger megaphone by becoming Ohio's next attorney general.

The Shaker Heights native plans an official announcement Monday.

Since the Bu reau of Workers' Compensation rare-coin invest ments became public last April, the 43-year-old lawyer has used a combination of lawsuits and one-liners to try to learn how the losses occurred and why Republicans in power failed to act sooner to protect taxpayers.

He has flooded the state with public-records requests. He has also sued to get access to Gov. Bob Taft's records and to question the governor and his top advisers under oath. The case is under review...

1. Marc Dann has become my favorite Democrat
Brown, Hackett, Redfern, Kucininch have gotten a lot of publicity around here. I would just like to point out that Marc Dann has been following Republicans around since Coingate broke. Everytime they come up for air he slaps a lawsuit on them. I love that man.

Attorney general candidate failed to report two gifts

Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sen. Marc Dann, who built momentum for his attorney general campaign on criticism of Gov. Bob Taft's failure to report numerous gifts, acknowledged Monday he forgot to report two gifts of his own.

Dann, a Youngstown Democrat, said he failed to report a leather jacket worth $168 given last year by ABATE of Ohio, an advocacy group for motorcyclists, and a $14 meal from Youngstown State University.

The omissions were first publicized by Ohio Republican Party chairman Bob Bennett, who said Dann is a hypocrite because of his criticism of Taft for the same problems.

Taft's failure to report numerous golf outings and other gifts led to his August conviction on four ethics charges...

COLUMBUS - State Sen. Marc Dann yesterday announced he would seek the Democratic Party nomination for attorney general next year. The head of the Ohio Republican Party responded by releasing an e-mail showing that Mr. Dann failed to disclose on his ethics form a $168 jacket he received from a motorcycle group.

Speaking in front of the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation headquarters, Mr. Dann said the agency "symbolizes everything that has gone terribly wrong in our state government since the Republicans assumed control of Ohio government in 1995 and began selling it off in pieces to the highest bidder."...

"It just shows how desperate those who want to keep the status quo want to keep a guy like me out of this office," Mr. Dann said...

Sen. Teresa Fedor (D., Toledo) introduced Mr. Dann as "our Eliot Spitzer of Ohio" - a reference to the New York state attorney general who has battled Wall Street firms in high-profile cases...
