A candidate whose record demands progressives’ support

By David Sirota

As anyone who’s spent time working on Capitol Hill knows, Washington, D.C., is really just an elaborate pressure system designed to turn corporate money and conservative conventional wisdom into congressional votes. With nearly every bill, there is a disconnect between what lawmakers tell the public they are doing and what they are actually doing and why.

In such a corrupt system, it seems nearly impossible to fight for the progressive agenda while ascending the power structure. The standard narrative says stay pure and be marginalized, or sell out the public and rise. But there are rare leaders who break this stereotype. One of them is Sherrod Brown.

A congressman from the Cleveland suburbs, Brown has both the fiery tenacity of history’s progressive champions and the seasoned political skills necessary to forge a different path to prominence. Over the years, he has defied the axiom that legislators who confront Washington’s corrupt pressure system don’t live to tell the tale. In fact, Brown has flourished.

On nearly every major issue, Brown has held the torch for progressives, even in the dark, lonely days when there was neither a blogosphere or infrastructure designed to support and promote progressive champions...

1. That's why I'm a Sherrod Brown supporter.
Whisper: Paul Hackett can beat Mean Jean this time.

4. The funny thing about Mean Jean...
is she will probably lose the primary next election. The majority of repukians don't like her. It should be an interesting primary in '06!

Sherrod Brown, like many Democrats from the northern part of the state are not known down here in SW Ohio. They don't come down here during the primaries or for that matter the general elections for State wide offices. For that reason I am supporting Paul Hackett for DeWine's seat.

On the other hand who ever wins the Democratic party primary for DeWine's seat has my support. I just hope the Democratic candidates talk on the issues facing Ohio and how they plan to help Ohioans and don't feed on each other.

5. I think you should vote for who you think would be the best Senator
I remember Dems voting for Kerry because they heard Kerry had the best chance of swinging independent voters or even republicans to vote for the Democratic candidate. Poll data told them that 10 months in advance of the November general election.

Democratic primary voters made their choice based on what they thought someone else was thinking.

Sometimes, simplest reasoning is the best.

2. I think Sherrod speaks to the way Ohioans think
He certainly has credibility when he speaks on issues like jobs for Ohioans. If any state has anxieties about jobs, it is Ohio. I don't think his "liberal credentials" will be a glaring problem in the race against Dewine.

3. Any state that regularly elected Howard Metzenbaum and John Glenn
surely can put it all together for Sherrod Brown.
