COLUMBUS - U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, criticized as too moderate by some in the right wing of his own party, faces another impediment to the Republican nomination in May.

Conservative David R. Smith of Mason, a senior financial analyst with Procter & Gamble, said he will start his campaign tonight in Lebanon. He ran unsuccessfully for the party's nomination in the special election this year that ultimately sent Republican Jean Schmidt to represent suburban Cincinnati in the U.S. House of Representatives.

" has failed to uphold the principles of less government and controlled spending, and he has failed in being the strong champion that we need to drive for real change," he said. "It takes bold actions to make a difference, not idle hope, and we cannot be satisfied with his efforts. He must be replaced."

Mr. DeWine of Cedarville is seeking a third six-year term in Washington. U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown of Lorain and Iraq War veteran Paul Hackett, who also unsuccessfully challenged Ms. Schmidt, are vying for the Democratic nomination....

Smith joins Senate contest

David R. Smith, a financial analyst from Mason who finished ninth in an 11-candidate field in the June Republican congressional primary, has set his sights even higher - a U.S. Senate seat. Smith will formally announce Wednesday that he will take on two-term incumbent Mike DeWine in next May's GOP Senate primary. Smith calls himself the "true conservative" in the race. He will not be the only challenger to DeWine. Earlier this month, Cincinnati engineer and math teacher William G. Pierce launched his candidacy for the seat. Two Democrats are expected to face off in the Democratic senate primary - Paul Hackett, the Indian Hill lawyer and Iraq veteran who lost to Republican Jean Schmidt in the 2nd Congressional District special election in August; and Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Lorain, a former Ohio secretary of state. Smith, a financial analyst for Procter & Gamble, drew 374 votes in the 2nd District's GOP primary in June. Schmidt, the winner, drew 14,232 votes

Engineer/educator to challenge DeWine

http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051104/NEWS01/511040427/1056

LEBANON - Saying he wanted to control the reach, cost and growth of government, a Cincinnati engineer and math teacher announced Thursday that he would challenge U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine for the Republican nomination.

Though William G. Pierce's announcement Thursday at the Golden Lamb was attended by only four people - including his wife and his mother - the 53-year-old father of three says his message will appeal to the masses.

DeWine and Pierce would face each other in a May 2006 primary.

Although he chaired the 1980 Warren County campaign to elect Ronald Reagan, this is Pierce's first run for political office, something that separates him from career politicians, he said...

1. Procter & Gamble owns Cincinnati
Now they want the whole state.

Let's find lots of dirt on Dewine and email it to Smith. Let's find lots of dirt on Smith and email it to Dewine.

2. I think it is great, make him spend more of his money
fantastic!

Now, if we can get down to a one man challenge (either Brown or Hackett) we can be ahead of the curve after the primaries (personal preference would be Hackett)

3. Actually, that makes 3
John Mitchel is running as well (http://www.reformcongress.com/). He's not a real threat to DeW(h)ine either, but Mitchel is probably the most serious of the 3 challengers. He's already been making the rounds of the local Republican groups. And he's already solicited an endorsement from the gun-rights PAC people I know. (Gun-rights supporters loathe DeW(h)ine.)

Mitchel ran against Voinovich 2 years ago and got 23% of the vote within even campaigning. I'm sure he's counting on the benefit of even more Republican displeasure with DeW(h)ine than with Voinovich.

Unless one of the 3 insurgents can raise some money and get some name recognition, though, having 4 candidates on the ballot actually helps DeW(h)ine by splitting the anti-DeW(h)ine vote.

4. Bad!
If Ohio elects this asshole..........

.........we're doomed.

But I don't see the people of this state on any extreme of the political spectrum. I honestly believe we'll elect a Democratic Senator!

5. Great! They'll claw each other to pieces in the primary (hopefully).
Now, if we can get Hackett and Brown to refrain from doing the same we'll be in great shape.
