Budget plan has OHSU reeling

Budget plan has OHSU reeling

Cuts in Gov. Ted Kulongoski's proposed budget would bleed the university of nearly 40 percent of the state support it now receives
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/news/110251103298330.xml

"A proposed cut of nearly 40 percent in state support for Oregon Health & Science University could eliminate a wide range of medical and educational programs and bring further tuition increases to OHSU's medical school -- already one of the priciest in the nation.

...

Thomson said OHSU's statewide undergraduate nursing program could face substantial reductions, leaving only a small program on OHSU's Marquam Hill campus.

...

Area Health Education Centers, which provide rural health education and training in five locations around the state, get all of their $1.3 million from the state. Those centers could be scaled back dramatically. OHSU's hospitals and clinics receive $7.5 million in state support -- just over 1 percent of their $623 million operating budget. But nearly all of the state funding goes to pay for indigent care. Thomson said OHSU, which provides twice the amount of care to those who can't pay for it as the average Oregon hospital, may have to cut back deeply in that area.

Some programs at the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center depend heavily on state funding. Those treating spina bifida; genetic, feeding and cranio-facial disorders; high-risk infants; special education and social work could be eliminated."

The world just keeps getting scarier and scarier for those who need a little help...
