A media project for Oregonians & neighbors: the Oregonian's endorsement
Ballots are due to be mailed to Oregon voters within the next few weeks.

We all know the right-wing editorial bent of the Oregonian, the newspaper that twisted itself into an inhalable pretzel in its bizarre rationalization for endorsing GWB in 2000.

Please take a bit of time, if you have any to spare, to compose your thoughts on why the Oregonian should endorse John Kerry for President in 2004. The case against Bush and for Kerry, as we know, is as strong as a case has ever been in a presidential election. Please lay it out briefly and concisely for the Editorial Board, and send your messages on this matter to these three people.

bobcaldwell@news.oregonian.com - Editorial Page Editor
pbhatia@news.oregonian.com - Executive Editor

Also, please share your thoughts here if you are willing.

Thank you.

1. The Oregonian is a Newhouse rag, and it will endorse bush
Sahrasohn, Duin, and Ohman are the only liberals allowed anywhere near that paper.

2. It's possible
A few elections back, the Oregonian _actually_ endorsed Clinton for president, the first time since it's founding that the Big O endorsed a Democratic candidate, so swag's dream is not impossible.

Unfortunately, they ran a piece in today's op-ed page from Mark Hatfield . . . endorsing the Shrub. I'm still not clear why this retired Liberal Republican endorsed Shrub, since his logic seemed somewhat circular -- he insisted we need to re-elect Bush as president because we need to support & stand behind the president. Hatfield's argument was almost as pathetic as Brittany Spear's was on "Fahrenheit 9/11".

At this point, I'd find a "battered wife's syndrome" argument from the liberal wing more convincing: "He's really a good person, deep down. And while he's disappointed us in the past, if we try _real hard_ & support him this time, he'll just have to do better." At least they'd start showing they weren't in denial about just how bad a job Bush has been doing.

4. Hatfield, the principled Quaker who voted against the Vietnam war?
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

3. I think they will endorse Bush
These (Oregonian editorial staff) are the people who in 2002 hired aerial photographers in an attempt to diminish the reported number of protesters against Bush in the runup to the Bush War For His Daddy On Iraq.

Have I said lately how much I hate these people?
