Bon Voyage, Doug Hoerth (WPTT), but why Mike Gallagher as replacement show?
Looks like ole "Uncle Dougie" didn't get his contract renewed on WPTT, the only Pittsburgh AM new talk that offered the Progressive or Liberal any real talk format (Lynn Cullen is one and, of course, Thom Hartman follows her weekdays).

But Hoerth, who in my opinion stunk up the station with his narrow, sometimes sexist, and off base point of view, thought a lot of himself. In the waning days of his show, his promos tried to make light of his self aggrandizing.

So, why does it seem that this idiot has to be replaced with the likes of Mike Gallagher, for crying out loud? I think Pittsburgh should continue the Air America Radio line up, and feature Randi Rhodes, who would bridge the old audience, and grow a much larger new one.

I hope WPTT keeps moving in the right direction. We need progressive talk in the burgh, en at...

1. Mike Gallagher - Ugh - I intend to write to them
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 04:25 PM by RamboLiberal
No email link on their website - snail mail address:

AM NEWSTALK 1360
900 Parish Street
Pittsburgh, PA 15220
(412) 875-4800

With Pittsburgh being saturated with wingnut talk why add one more especially since you have two liberal shows preceding Gallagher.

I haven't listened to Hoerth except on occasion when in the car and it was a choice between him or Honzberger or listening to an audio book or a music station. Hoerth turned me off back in 2001-02 when he went pro-Bush and pro-war for quite awhile. And I agree with all you said about him. Still he was somewhat of a Pittsburgh institution with his own group of loyal listeners.

I hope they don't can Lynn as well since she's the lone local left on that station. I'm writing to them later today suggesting if they want to hire a local talent they try to get Chris Moore or John McIntyre(though I thought John's show sucked on that short FM stint he did but I still remember how good he was most of the time on Nighttalk).

If they want syndicated then yeah pick up Randi, or go with a tape delay of Ed Schultz like a lot of stations do. They'd keep people like myself who have listened to them from 9am-3pm from turning them off at 3 for an internet station carrying Randi or Ed.

BTW Lynn announced she's off Monday, I'm glad she did or I might've been in a funk all day Monday wondering if she was gone as well.

2. Thanks for the contact info-
True, this 3 to 6 spot should be kept local, and Hoerth had his local listeners. I think I'll contact them. Recommending an all progressive line up would be great. We have the listeners out there. The station should also boost their signal, like we were told they would. What happened with that?

Speaking of John Mac, my husband and I absolutely loved him on Night talk. He was hilarious and had great conversations. What is wrong with the local media? (never mind) I don't know who put that ditsy helmet head (we call her) in his place, but she's awful. Her show should be canned and John should go back doing what he did best. Cullen - great. What I can't figure out is how to get someone on earlier than her who is progressive, as you have to be a slope browed, knuckle dragger get up early to listen to Laura Ingram. What, are stations like candidates, trying to reach out for bi-partisan listeners to buy soap?

Go figure.

3. I've heard many a caller to Lynn and it's also my feeling
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 01:26 AM by RamboLiberal
That we don't turn on WPTT till 9am. While I'm taking a shower I'm usually tuned to KDKA for news or to CNN while I dress for work. Then if I leave the house before 9 it's KDKA or an audio book in the car till Lynn comes on. I'd gladly keep the radio tuned to WPTT from the time I get up till their signal fades at night if they were all progressive.

Or they could rerun Clark Howard during the morning. I could use some of his financial advice during this Bush recession.

4. I'd like to see Johnny Mac get another chance. He's great when
he talks politics and current events. The format for his short-lived FM show just didn't fit him. I used to find "Uncle Douggie" mildly amusing, but once he went all pro-war I tuned him out forever.

5. Even worse they replaced Hoerth with Laura Ingram today
Ugh! I wonder though if that is temporary since there was no advertising of this today. I read on another blog that another station has Gallagher's contract so I wonder if PG got the story wrong on the replacement.

6. All I know is that I had heard Ingram that day for about 2 minutes, and -
TURNED IT OFF!

What vitriol and useless garbage. Maybe if the ratings go down enough, they'll realize that they better continue with Progressive Talk.

7. Doug Hoerth
Edited on Fri Dec-14-07 01:53 AM by Diwi
I've always had a like/dislike view on Doug Hoerth. I sent
him a long email about a month ago (never responded to)
telling him, he was at his best when relating everyday life
sort of trivia, as well as dealing with music and movies,
lighter stuff. I also told him however, that his political
views were all over the map, and I had to tune him out
eventually when he turned to politics.

Still, he was an alternative on the dial from 3 to 6 for me
personally and for Pittsburghers in general. What do we have
now? Pending whatever WPTT 1360 goes with eventually, far to
the left of the dial are some rather wacko medical and
religious shows, and then the two sports talk shows on 979AM
and 1250AM, with far right wing KDKA (how did they ever get so
bad, except for Chris Moore on Sundays?), then the oldies
music station, 1360 WPTT, and then the all news KQV. On FM,
there is NPR and Sean Hannity as far as talk goes, and SH is
just unlistenable, as is Honsberger on KDKA.

This reduces one wishing any kind of "talk" radio to
basically the sports shows (if you're into any of that, which
I am generally), KDKA, and Sean (dipcrap) Hannity, and NPR.
While I had many problems with Doug Hoerth, aside from some of
his political views, which he even managed to get right now
and then thanks to his libertarian views, it is a real shame
he's not on the air anymore.

I'd really like to know the real, full story behind his
departure. I think calling the station or emailing them or
even writing to them, is a waste of time. They're just going
to lie.

They are hypocrites at WPTT however, if they can't even level
with the public as to why Doug Hoerth was sacked. Let alone
put some total butthead like Ingram or Gallagher in his place.

Will wait to see what develops over there. If anyone has any
news or updates about this 1360 WPTT 3PM to 6PM change, and
what REALLY happened with Hoerth, I'd appreciate someone
posting that info here.

8. Lynn addressed his departure briefly Thursday
Edited on Fri Dec-14-07 12:19 PM by RamboLiberal
She couldn't say much. Just that the only thing Doug did wrong was picking the radio business. She said she just works there and the management said they chose to not renew the contract. She felt bad because basically she and Hoerth worked at the same stations for nearly 20 years. In fact their blabathons used to be fun though the last 2 with Hoerth and Jerry Bowyer teaming against her were not fun. I remember Hoerth went off on her at one and she ended up near tears sitting in stunned silence for quite awhile. He ended up calling her numerous times that night groveling in apology.

On a side note those last couple of blabathons got so tense I as an audience got in a vocal fight with another audience member.

Getting back to Doug, I did read on one blog that he blistered the halls when they told him - who knows from a blog if that is the truth. And also read it was all about ratings of course. Geez, what do they expect.

They did have a local host filling in Thursday - I think it was Ron Morris who does a weekend financial show for them. So they did drop Ingram at least that day in the time period. I got the feeling they haven't got anything to fill. Perhaps they thought Hoerth would fill out his contract till end of month and he chose not to. Who knows.

I hope they recognize there are people like myself who have then on from 9 - 3, but then turn them off at 3. If they got a good local or syndicated liberal host I'd stick with them all day.

9. Interesting comments... maybe you can follow-up...
No one dissappears off the face of the earth. Perhaps you can contact the station and find where snail mail could be forwarded (should you be that committed to his answering you). Perhaps he will, once away from the microphone.

I e-mailed him once, never a response, and I called him on old television triva, when he was practially giddy. He had a quirky personality for radio. I think he has to realize that doesn't do well in our demographics.

I know he's out there, so I'll post if I hear or read something.

10. More on Doug Hoerth...
Thanks for the info, folks, even if it may not be reliable.
But Lynn's reaction and comments sound really cold. I
would've hoped for a bit more insight from her, but maybe
"management" have silenced her. If she really has
any guts, maybe she will talk more honestly and openly soon,
if she feels really "bad" about this turn of events.

Like I said, I have and had mixed feelings about Doug Hoerth,
either as a person or as a local talk show host from 3-6pm on
Wptt1360. His political views were irritating, but I could
always switch channels to listen to some other talk, and he
didn't dwell on politics usually. For other stuff, trivial
but highly entertaining stuff like visiting his doctor's
office, his extracted stories from his past, his alcoholism
and prison time, and music, movies, etc., I thought he was
great.

But no radio talk shows are perfect. Or informative AND
entertaining 100 percent of the time. Doug Hoerth was and is
a Pittsburgh talk radio hall of famer, regardless of some of
his stupidness and egoism. I have a feeling it was his
ratings, bottom line. Why the station just can't SAY this, is
beyond me, but go figure CORPORATE "management."

In fact, I wrote to the "contact" email at WPTT
asking why Doug Hoerth's show was cancelled, and I got this
reply:

"From: Mike McGann (RBC-Pittsburgh)
(MMcgann@rendabroadcasting.com)

I have no idea how to reach Doug by emailthe decision was made
at corporate"

That was their reply. They couldn't even finish a sentence,
but DID manage to mention "corporate." UH-HUH.

Depending on what WPTT1360 finally decides to fill the 3-6PM
slot with, I hope for the best (no more right wingnuts,
pleeeeze), and think Hoerth will turn up sooner or later.

If anyone gets any updates on the Doug Hoerth firing and where
and if he can be reached, please post it. It's a real mystery
to me, a semi-fan. And a shame as far as how low Pittsburgh
talk radio continues to sink.

P.S. Wptt advertises itself as the "revolution of talk
radio," so I'd like to know what the heck is LAURA
(pinhead) INGRAM even DOING on their precious radio station?
