200 teachers could be laid off in the Easton Area School District, on top of 70 teacher positions eliminated last year.

----
It also affects small lower income non-urban districts, including 22 teachers proposed to be laidoff in the Bangor Area School District.

8. I can speak a little to your one link,
that's the limerick.patch one as it concerns the school district that I reside in.

The budget cuts proposed by Gov. Corbet represents only about $82 per residency for this district. That's not much as far as how other districts are affected.

There is maybe about 15% of the population that covers the district where it would have an adverse effect. The median income in this particular area is pretty much above the average.

The cutbacks themselves probably would have little effect as the size of the district is pretty big. From what I've heard, the positions are more ancillary positions, not all teachers.

Thanks for your good work, JPZ. "Corbetted" is a great term for what is happening.

6. Gerald Zahorchak.... Rendell's former Sec. of Education:
I thought that name rang a bell! He is the guy who brought us full-day kindergarten (now on the chopping block), Keystone Exams and SAS. He also headed up the RTTT application for PA.

The wikipedia article said he plans to furlough 300 teachers and hiring part-timers, who are "not on the district payroll" --- WTF? Whose payroll are they on?

"On March 24, Zahorchak's proposal for district wide reform will be put before the Allentown School Board. The plan for reform is based primarily on financial expectations within the district. While the plan calls for the hiring of new teachers who will not be full time and not on district payroll, it also calls for the termination of 300+ teachers."

In response to the above comment, the proposal of the Allentown Superintendent was to delete almost all honors levels classes, and replace them with "dual enrollment" classes taught by non-union adjunct instructors hired by the Lehigh Carbon Community College.

9. Nice.... adjunct instructors do not need one course in education.
Many of them do not even have master's degrees.

13. Kids will pay for that in terms of readiness and progress when they enter 1st grade...

...Will they every catch up through the rest of their education?

Oh well, if not we'll just build more privatized prisons.
