HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett is scheduled to undergo back surgery Monday in Pittsburgh, his office said.

Corbett's operation at Allegheny General Hospital is part of his treatment for spinal stenosis. He will spend a day or two in the hospital, but expects to return to Harrisburg by the end of next week, his office said Friday.

While Corbett, 61, is under anesthesia, Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley will serve as acting governor.

Spinal stenosis, most commonly caused by aging, is a narrowing of the spinal canal that can lead to persistent pain and decreased physical activity.

The surgery is being performed by Dr. Mark A. Fye, an orthopedic spinal specialist, and Dr. Patrick J. DeMeo, an orthopedic surgeon. Updates on the operation and Corbett's condition will be provided at a news briefing following the surgery.

News of the surgery came as debate over the governor's state budget plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1 is heating up in the Legislature. His proposed spending cuts for higher education and public schools, as well as his opposition to imposing a new tax on the booming natural-gas drilling industry, have drawn criticism from some of his fellow Republicans, who control both the House and Senate.

Corbett recently underwent a series of tests in preparation for the surgery, but is otherwise considered to be in excellent health, according to the governor's office.

During last year's gubernatorial primary campaign, Corbett was the only one of the six candidates who refused an Associated Press request to provide a written statement from his doctor about his physical fitness to serve as governor.

However, his campaign confirmed news reports that Corbett suffered a mild heart attack on Valentine's Day in 1997 and underwent an angioplasty to clear a blocked artery. He had felt chest pains and drove himself to a Pittsburgh hospital, where he was admitted for three or four days, a campaign spokeswoman said last year.

But on the bright side, maybe his evil disposition is due to all the persistent pain and decreased physical activity. Maybe he will be a nice guy after this surgery.

Watching Corbett's state of the union speech showed Cawley sitting behind him bobbing his head up and down and smililng was like watching some obscene combination of a Bobblehead Doll & the Great Pumpkin.

Seriously, this man's governmental/management experience is in the negative numbers.

In 2005 Cawley became a county commissioner via appointment, not election in a GOP county and of course managed to be elected once again when he ran as a sitting GOP commissioner in an overwhelmingly GOP Bucks County.

He served as Chief of Staff to State Senator Tommy Tomlinson (an undertaker/funeral home owner). Cawley describes himself as "responsible for the operations of the Harrisburg and Bucks County district offices." Tomlinson was only elected to the state Senate in 2005, so was not even a committee chair when Cawley worked for him. So Cawley's responsibilities covered the gamut from knowing how the lobbyists liked their coffee to making sure the secretaries didn't take too many bathroom breaks.

And now he's in charge of the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania! Temporarily for now, and for the next 3.5 years just a heartbeat away. Gollee! Only in America!

Maybe, it has something to do with the fact that he cut funding to the University of Pittsburgh by 50%. Go figure.

for staff privileges. If a doctors aren't officially (meaning exclusively) affiliated with UPMC, they get very limited access, or none at all to surgical privileges. UPMC's goal appears to be to buy out or drive out of business every hospital in the area. Allegheny General is one of the few left, and has had to cut back staff and services, and I wonder how long it can survive.
