Jeff Gannon attended my Alma Mater
Per wikipedia:

"Jeff (sic) Guckert was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity when he attended West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania."

1. Don't tell me, let me guess...
ROTC member, always sat in the back of the class, used to hang around the men's locker room but never seemed to play any sports?

8. College Dems know about it now.
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 07:06 PM by Kire
I sent this information to the Yahoo! group I still moderate for the
College Dems chapter there. Here's to hoping they'll dig up something
interesting.

The faculty advisor is a History professor who loves to do research about anybody and anything related to politics in town. If there's anything there, I have faith that he'll find it.

6. Can you find a picture?
It would be so helpful if we could find a yearbook picture of James D. Guckert. Or a team picture, or class, or fraternity photo. That way we would know if this is the same man.

9. Birthdate? Year of graduation?
Does the school have this info? There was some discussion earlier as to his age. One source said 47 but he doesn't look that old. Also, I know some astrologers who would love to know his birth info. Really.

His real name is James Guckert.

that's why I put the (sic) where I did (or should I put it after his last name?)

15. Jeff (sic) Guckert makes perfect sense --- now.
I understand now that you think that the person who typed the wikipedia entry made a mistake and typed Jeff instead of James. (all of these names do get confusing)
My concern is that maybe it is true that someone named "Jeff Guckert was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity when he attended West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania."

and that there was no mistake --- other than this is just some other person named Jeff Guckert.

Why hadn't I even thought of that? Damn.

Wikipedia is no kind of authoritative resource.

Well, we will find out one way or the other.

19. J.D. Guckert graduated in 1980
Edited on Sun Feb-27-05 01:29 PM by Kire
there is an address in Wilmington, Delaware and it looks like he joined the "Alumni Online Community" on 10/8/2004 9:59:13 AM.

that's all it says

Jeff Gannon was apparently born in 1958, so that would make him 22 when he graduated. So, it's pretty safe to deduce that the title of this thread is still accurate. That's a relief to me, at least.

:boring:, indeed

nobody seems to be returning my messages from the College Dems group over there

Ironically, both the President of the College Dems and the Faculty advisor are named James. I just thought of that, and it made me smile.

Edit: Apparently, I can send him an email through this service if I want to.

Edit redux: A la Friendster, I can ask him to become one of my "personal pals", too.

21. Thanks Kire
Jeff Gannon, fake reporter --- says real name is James D. Guckert

Jim Guckert of Wilmington, Delaware owes 20,000 in taxes

Jim Guckert of Wilmington, graduated in 1980.

-----------------------

There is also the possibility that this man Gannon/Guckert was Johnny Gosch that was the paperboy from Iowa that was kidnapped at age 12 in 1982.
However there is the problem with the dates (graduated in 1980)
If he was 12 in 1982, then 18 in 1988 (high school graduation)

Thats where a picture would really help out.

23. heard from history professor/college dem advisor
Regarding Gannon, by now you probably know that his real name is J. D. Guckert. I cehcked (sic) the relevant yearbook and found that he graduated from WCU in 1980, was involved in TKE fraterity, was a resident assistant for two years, played soccer one year and was the sports editor of the Quad (student newspaper). He's from Conneaut Lake PA, wherever that is.

25. woo hoo! Vanity Fair is on the case!
I replied to this same history professor (Jim Jones, who is also running for Mayor or West Chester, BTW) gently prodding him about maybe finding some of the spors articles that Gannon wrote back then. This is part of his reply, today:

The Library has the Quad on microfilm from those years, and as Sports Editor, he probably shows up in most of them. It's worth a look, but I probably won't get to it any time soon (my eyes are really bad as well, so reding microfilm is probably impossible).

While I was in the library yesterday, I met a freelance journalist who was researching the subject. I told him about the Quad on microfilm, so maybe he'll have a look. He said he was composing an article for Vanity Fair.

26. Jim Jones, said history professor is running for mayor of town (story)
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 02:09 AM by Kire
Story here.

It turns out that the current Republican mayor of West Chester was a professor, too, for 38 years. In fact, he was a football coach and Director of Athletics for a time. Now, I don't know when that was exactly, but he was definitely on campus when JD Guckert was the Sports Editor for the school newspaper.

I don't even know why I'm posting this now, because it might jeopardize me getting some of that reward. Oh well. I'll probably just lose it at the track or something.
