Abortion tops 1st talk with public by Swann

GREENSBURG - Former football star Lynn Swann said last night that he was a conservative who opposed abortion, but that he was still forming his campaign positions.

On most issues, Swann said he was planning to "talk to the people across this state to find out what they want" from a Republican candidate for governor.

Swann addressed an enthusiastic crowd at the Westmoreland County District Three dinner and reception here last night.

Republican activists like Lorraine Derezansky of Johnstown braved near-blizzard conditions to hear the retired football hero and network sportscaster.

"We Republicans have to do something really big to get rid of Rendell, and Swann is big enough, charming enough; he can do the job -- maybe he's the only one who can," she said. "And being a star from back when the Steelers won Super Bowls, that can't hurt."

And I bet Eagles fans won't vote for Swanny.

Loved Swann as a player - but he should stick to football. I'm so sick of these "sports and celebrity heros" getting in to politics - mostly as Repugs! And notice how they mostly always run for a big office. I'd have more respect for them if they started at the state legislator level and learned the ropes of government.

Stick to football sideline broadcasting Swanny! I really despised your kissup and campaigning for W.
