Druce Serving Sentence At Minimum Security Prison

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Former state Rep. Thomas W. Druce, sentenced for his role in the hit-and-run death of a Harrisburg man, will do his time at a minimum security prison in western Pennsylvania.

The state Department of Corrections assigned Druce to serve out his two-to-four year sentence at the State Correctional Institution at Laurel Highlands, the state's primary prison for elderly and infirm inmates in Somerset County, 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

Druce, 42, had spent the last 3 1/2 years confined to his suburban Philadelphia home or wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet while he appealed his sentence. He was ordered back to prison two weeks ago.

House Minority Leader H. William DeWeese, D-Greene, an outspoken critic of Druce, criticized the decision to assign Druce to Laurel Highlands.

"I'm outraged," DeWeese said. "He should be doing hard time in a mean cell."
