South Carolina political candidates were offered the 2006 National Political Awareness Test by Project Vote Smart, but few opted to participate, project officials said.
The test is designed to “let voters know if the candidates who want to represent them are willing to reveal their positions on the issues they will have to deal with on the public's behalf if elected,” said Mary Gillespie, research coordinator for the nonpartisan organization.
Gillespie said that 21 percent of candidates for the 124 state House seats and six U.S. House seats participated.
Although 54 percent of South Carolina’s candidates for the U.S. House agreed to outline their views on key issues, only 19 percent of legislative candidates did so, she said.
