Let's talk SC Presidential election history.

South Carolina has gone to the Democrats only twice in the last 48 years. Carter in '76 and Kennedy in '60.

We're all familiar with racial politics in South Carolina, the hottest issue in this category being the Confederate flag debate. This state has a rough and ugly history of racial politics.

The primaries this year just might indicate an incredible historical milestone in the making. Democrats trounced Republicans in terms of turnout. And if I recall correctly (without looking it up - please correct me if I am wrong) Obama's margin of victory over Clinton was larger than the total number of votes McCain received in winning the GOP primary.

Could it be that S.C. makes history this year? If Obama gets the nomination, could we see S.C. go in the "D" column again...could this become a "blue state" again...with a black candidate at the top of the ticket?

(Disclaimer: I'm not saying this as an Obama supporter. I voted for Edwards and I am honestly not enthusiastic about either of the remaining two candidates. I just want that to be clear so people won't accuse me of being in a "cult". :) )

If Obama carries SC, that means McCain probably wouldn't carry but 3 or 4 states like Mississippi, Utah and Wyoming. 10% more people here classify themselves as GOP than Democratic. That being said, a close race could have a major impact on the future.
You mention the rebel flag, I think that is just a symbol of the real appeal of the GOP. LBJ, when signing the 1964 Civil Rights Act, noted that he was delivering the South to the GOP for the next generation or so. Once the under 30 crowd takes over, I don't think race (or gay marriage or abortion, etc) will motivate the electorate.

...Democratic voters going to the polls, we have to make sure to have real candidates in absolutely every race imaginable. School boards, county councils, mayors, dog catchers...everything. We can use the Obama charisma and coattails to change the face of SC politics.

If you have ever thought about running, now is the time. If you know anyone, talk them into it. Raise money for local candidates and lets bring change to SC!!!!!

That you are correct in that finding dissatisfaction or discomfort given the choices left at hand .And that no doubt is carrying considerable weight over the heads of very many peoples ,voter peoples. This fast lane,fast track thing of a sort.
I do agree with Edwards statement reguarding Obama ,He,s just not ready and Hillery, not confortable there either.It,s not a good place to be although it,s a fact.

Nixon won the 68 elections by saying he would bring to a end the Vietnam war. He won and that happened.Little did anyone know what they had going in the planning. And what they had going in the planning is just why Nixon cronnies were brought back threw Bush.

Jimmy Carter had no idea what he was walking into when he took office.
Obama has less than that.

And Hillery remains suspect for what she and Bill both know about all that,although Hillery now claims she regreats suporting the war.
How about Bill.s presidential proprait where Bill displays a sideways sign for peace ,or wasn,t that also a sideways famous V for victory Nixon used,even on the day he left office? What ever did he mean by that ,does that mean he was victorious over impeachment? -that was the thought of that day.

Oh, I know, you can just call me over the hill,too old for this cult stuff.
