China, Vietnam face high tariffs; more seafood battles to come

BY TONY BARTELME
Of The Post and Courier Staff
In a decision that made waves from Mount Pleasant's Shem Creek to the sprawling shrimp farms of Asia, the U.S. Commerce Department on Tuesday said China and Vietnam had illegally dumped hundreds of millions of dollars in shrimp into the United States, driving many American shrimpers to the brink of bankruptcy.

1. well, maybe so........
But shrimpers are also suffering from too many shrimpers. That, and the fact that far too many turtles have washed up this year temper my sympathy.

2. Please forgive my ignorance about "too many turtles"
Being a native of the Upstate, I'm not sure what that means. I have some ideas about it, of course, but I'm pretty sure they're all wrong. Please explain ...

3. my beef is not with SC shrimpers per se
but with shrimpers in general. This past May 82 turtles washed up in Georgia waters between the 5th and 24th. This is believed due to night trawling, which fortunately is not allowed in SC. Last year some 60 very endangered Leatherback Turtles met the same fate.
The shrimp farms are no better, they are generally built by destroying mangrove swamps, which is where the shallow water is.
I boycotted shrimp years ago when shrimpers fought tooth and nail against installation of turtle excluder devices and even now try to avoid shrimp, not an easy thing for this native of Baltimore, where seafood is all.
