Nominate Barbara Boxer for the 2005 Jefferson Awards
http://www.aips.org/nominate/index.html

Click on the National Nomination Form and nominate Barbara Boxer for the

• U.S. Senator John Heinz Award for Greatest Public Service by an Elected or Appointed Official

I wish they had more than one award per year to give away because it wasn't just Barbara Boxer who contested the 2004 Ohio election. I really think Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, John Conyers, etc. all deserve one.

I opt for Barbara Boxer by the mere fact that she stood ALONE amongst her colleagues and, to me, that should raise the bar for all the senators to act for fair elections.

1. backbone award for stephanie tubbs jones
Today Stephanie Tubbs Jones will receive a Backbone Award from the Backbone Campaign for her courageous challenge regarding the certification of Ohio electoral votes. She will receive the award from her constituents in Cleveland. The Backbone Award is for elected officials who take principled progressive stands and stand up to the regressive policies of the Bush Administration. The Backbone Campaign is also working on awards for Maxine Waters, John Conyers, Barbara Boxer and others, and we invite collaboration with people across the country to reward those few courageous Congresspeople willing to show backbone.
You can check out the Backbone Campaign at www.backbonecampaign.org and see the creative tools we offer the progressive movement.

Tubbs Jones is currently sponsoring the common-sense “Count Every Vote Act” (co-sponsored in the Senate by Barbara Boxer and Hillary Rodham Clinton), which addresses the current crisis of confidence in our electoral system through comprehensive election reform such as: requiring a voter verified paper ballot, requiring the Federal Election Assistance Commission to issue standards that ensure uniform access to voting machines, designating Election Day a federal holiday, and much more.

"Stephanie Tubbs Jones represents a group of Congresspeople who have recognized that our elections do not belong to the candidates - they belong to the people,” says The Backbone Campaign’s Executive Director, Bill Moyer. “Premature concessions, unequal access to an non-verifiable ballot, and political operatives supervising elections and vote counting have severely damaged public confidence in this most basic ritual of our democracy."
