Reilly slams Romney on PAC activity
By Frank Phillips and Raphael Lewis, Globe Staff | February 2, 2005

Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly yesterday criticized Governor Mitt Romney over reports that a group of his political allies distributed more than $250,000 to Republicans around the country last fall, alleging that the governor is focusing too much attention on his national ambitions and not enough on the issues facing Massachusetts.
Reilly, who has told colleagues he will seek the Democratic nomination for governor next year, specifically cited the Procter & Gamble takeover of Gillette Co., the Boston razor giant, saying the governor allowed the acquisition to take place right under his nose without putting up a fight.

"I wish there'd be more attention and more emphasis paid on what's happening in South Boston, where Gillette is headquartered, than what's happening in South Carolina," Reilly said, referring to a key presidential primary state where Romney is scheduled to speak to a local county Republican Party organization later this month. "You can't have your mind in two places." "The one thing the governor promised all of us is that he could get into the corporate headquarters and talk directly to all of the CEOs and bring businesses to Massachusetts," Reilly told reporters. "Well, it's pretty clear there's one CEO that he could not get in contact with, and that's the head of Gillette."

Most analysts agree that Romney will seriously weigh a race for the GOP presidential nomination in 2008. The Globe reported yesterday that a group of allies formed The Commonwealth Pac in July and have distributed money to candidates in states that will be key in a presidential race.
