2. Yes I am well aware of this fact
I'm 2 miles south of the NC border living in SC. Thanks for the help though.

4. My apologies for sounding snide.
I really did mean to add a smiley.

Carowinds.

15. Welcome obxhead!
I too am a South Carolinian living just south of Charlotte... I'm amazed that so many people don't realize how close to "south of the border" Charlotte is...

Welcome... I like at least driving into Charlotte... if I drive south, further into South Carolina, it gets very redneck scary very quick...

We're new here too, just moved down in October of last year from DC. Quite a change, being plopped smack dab in the middle of the bible belt.

3. Go visit Asheville, Blue Ridge Parkway, et al.
and get out of that ugly urban sprawl! That's just my opinion.

5. I know the Blue Ridge Parkway
from VA quite well. Can't wait to explore the Great Smokey mtn. national park. Charlotte is urban sprawl, but it seems small compared to the DC area. Much less pollution as well.

7. Thought I'd look for you here
Agree - come on out of suburbia into the city. Are you renting or already buying? Uptown or surrounding neighborhoods is where you want to be to get any "liberal" vibes. Two miles beyond SC border is a deadzone, in my opinion, compared to inner city.

I don't even think you can join our wonderful YMCA unless you are in Charlotte metro area. But you can get a library card for a nominal fee, I think. Do you by any chance work uptown?

8. Yeah not much to see
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 09:04 PM by obxhead
except for the sprawl (rapidly expanding in Fort Mill as far as a I can tell) I did take a drive all around Charlotte yesterday and thought it was pretty cool. Coming from the northern VA area it was a welcome change.
I'm here to return to school, so work is going to be some BS job, such as waiter. I havn't started the hunt yet though.
on edit
Welcome to DU. :hi:

9. If you get a chance, check out the uptown nightlife
You do know Johnson and Wales (cooking school) has a campus in the center city. Lots of high dollar restaurants uptown. Also access to public transit better the closer you are to center city.

11. If you're an NFL fan
Panthers stadium is a cool place to catch a game. And, since NO upset them last week, you can probably score some affordable tickets outside.
I would concur with the earlier poster; the Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall is one of nature's masterpieces. Just don't expect to find lodging there if you don't lock it in months before. Mid-October is the usual peak for the leaves.

13. There is great and Free camping at Jonas Ridge
less traveled path for most hikers. You can see Grandfather Mountain from the Dark Side Cliff Trail, you can do a long 13 mile loop hike crossing creeks and seeing beautiful waterfalls. Jonas Ridge is my favorite place.

As you get into Jonas Ridge (the town) you turn right at the post office and then every fork in the road you come to take a right and it will take you into wilderness area.

www.hikingthecarolinas.com is another good place to visit to see more hiking opportunities
