How the Rich Folks live on Kiawah Island, SC after Katrina! Barf Alert!
Now that our summer visitors have mostly returned home I took the
opportunity this week to make a foray into our beautiful new shopping
center
Freshfields. Boy was I surprised. I went to six different facilities in
a
two hour span and got all my "off-island" chores for this week done
while
saving a ton of money on gasoline.

First, I went to the cleaners ( used the drive thru, no less ) where
the
very nice lady personally put my clothes onto the hook in the back seat
without me even having to get out of my car . Plus she gave me a 10%
discount for paying cash in advance. I love a deal!

Second, I parked directly in front of Vincent's Drug Store where not
only
did they have all four of our prescriptions ready within two hours of
calling them in, they recognized me as the husband of someone whose 5th
prescription had just arrived and quickly filled it and saved me a
separate
trip. Well, I had heard about the soda fountain at Vincent's so I
couldn't
wait to actually sit at the counter like I did as a kid and order
lunch.
Unfortunately, my diet would not allow me to test the ice cream ( I
have to
say this because my wife will red this message ) but I had a delicious
cheeseburger and potato salad served up by the friendly counter staff.
Of
course, I did have to put up with a twenty-something who proceeded to
shout
all of her personal problems at increasing volume into her cell phone
next
to my left ear. Everybody in the place was really getting upset, so
waiting
as long as I possibly could and instituting all the Southern manners my
Mother taught me growing up here in Charleston, I slowly and simply put
down
my cheeseburger and extracting as much drama as I possibly could turned
my
pretty face directly into hers and without saying a word gave her my
best
parental death stare. Eventually even this airheaded young woman
realized
something was wrong and at least lowered her voice and moved to another
location.

Third, I sauntered across the way to the gorgeous new "Southern Stlye
Salon"
where the receptionist Carol Yeager greeted me and introduced me to
Johna
Wood. Johna was so nice and laughed at all my jokes and did I say she
gave
me a great haircut for a ridiculously low price ( please don't tell her
I
said that, remember, I love a deal! ). My only "complaint" about Johna
was
that she being from Nebrasaka tried to tell me she did not remember the
1981
National Championship Game where, as you all know, Clemson trashed the
Big
Red One. See my hero Mr. Jim Stuckey over at the sales office for all
the
glorious details.

Fourth, I went across the street to see my old tennis buddy ( ok,
nemesis )
Nat Malcolm in his and Linda's beautiful new bookstore, Indigo Books.
They
are great. Nat knows exactly what I like and had already busted my book
budget within two minutes of my arrival with right on the mark
suggestions
which, of course, I purchased. Another great local couple running a
wonderful Kiawah Island "institution".

Well, thus armed, my 5th stop was naturally Java Java. While I've
consumed
as much caffein as anybody at Starbucks from Seattle to New York, I
much
prefer the little locally owned coffe shop. Shock of shock, in-store
wireless and a public terminal! So cool, too cool even for Little Ole
Kiawah
Island! While there, I was pleased to hear the owner say he was
thinking of
taking the entire month of January off. Great idea even tho it will
mean
I'll be back at Starbucks.

Which leads to my 6th stop: Pig Newton. Had I landed on another planet
or
was I really on Kiawah Island? Shades of Dragers in Menlo Park and
Gene's
Market in Saratoga, California. Except, of course, I got lost trying to
find
the Carnation creamer. This is why I don't shop for groceries, not my
"bag".
Get it?

So what is all this about, other than a chance for me to get your
attention,
Dear Reader which I hope I have done. Why do I want your attention?
Well, in
these trying times ( Katrina, Terrorists, taxes, etc. ) I for one feel
damn
lucky ( & proud ) to be living on Kiawah Island. I hope you do too.
Thanks
for reading this.

6. It comes from a Kiawah Owners Message Board site.
I can't link you because the threw me off (I'm a former owner on Kiawah) but after I sold my property and kept "agitating" a real estate agent looked me up and threw me off the message board for raising a stink over folks who want to rent property...and other things.

I got back on the Message Board with persistance...but I can only read and if they find out I'm back I'll get axed again.

It's a REAL eye-opener, isn't it. :puke:

8. I shouldn't make fun of these folks....

I shouldn't make fun of these folks...but OMG they drove me crazy when I was there...and they are even worse since their CHIMP has become the annointed one. Don't they realize if another Hugo or Katrina comes they will have BIG problems? Or maybe they know THEY will be taken care of BEFORE everyone else!

To be fair there are a few out there on Kiawah who bought way back when it was and "Environmentall Friendly Place" and we thought that it would be a new center of how to live and build and blend in with the environment. Sadly, the place got taken over by the Corporatists and when "Environment" was no longer a "hot button" the Jackels took over. That's why we sold our family place there.

I grew up in SC and bought there after Hugo so it was kind of cheap for a family to buy then. You can't touch a place on Kiawah today because of the BUSH BOT FRENZY for Bubble Real Estate.

It's a beautiful place but tainted now...sad...because it could have been so much better than what it became..as you can see by the post.

9. Ok thanks, I guess these people have the right to by whatever...
...propaganda they wish to listen to with the Bush tax breaks they have been given so far.

I rank these comments Right t up their with Barbara Bush's statements about not wanting her beautiful mind despoiled in any way and her most recent comment about "these New Orleans poor now having it made" or words to that effect.

We truly live in two Americas perhaps many more than that. We may actually be approaching the caste system of India's past.

A Beautiful Mind

Claim: Former First Lady Barbara Bush said of the war in Iraq: "Why should we hear about body bags and deaths? It's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

Working Very Well for Them

Claim: Former first lady Barbara Bush said that New Orleans refugees being housed in the Houston Astrodome were "underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them."

10. I know....and what's sad is that most of us didn't see it coming,I think..
who would have thought this could happen in so short a time...or maybe it was coming and we just didn't see it with Bill Clinton. I don't know..it's too awful.

12. You got this from a message board that
you've been thrown off of? How did you get it? Just curious.

13. It wasn't easy...I got back on...but as long as I don't post and just read
it's okay. It's a loose board, not like most political message boards with mods and such...so it took some effort but I figured out a way. As I said ...I can read but not reply because technically I'm no longer an owner. Which is fair...so I'm sort of a voyeur, now.

I still have family in that area so it's not like I'm a troll or anything. I got thrown off because I no longer owned property when my family sold it and I was a Democrat who used to post rebuttals to the kind of crap that folks would post on there.

Most of it's boring. Folks looking for plumbers and heating and airconditoning recommendations and cable vs. sattelite dish, etc. It's only occasionally the discussion breaks out into what I posted. There are some really down to earth nice folks there. But, many of the "second home" people who live elsewhere have the attitude of the poster. The people who live their year round mostly aren't like that.

Really put out by all the "trying times" isn't he?

I'm so happy his little world of luxury remains undisturbed.

11. You took this seriously?
Sure looks to me like a satirical piece, mocking people in Kiawah. Even if this was written by someone local, who may or may not be rich, it has all the hallmarks of satire.

Several replies were thanking the poster because they were SO TIRED of negative posts. The posters all agreed with that person! It was totally serious,as satirical as it sounds. This is the way the Bushies think...and there are many like them.

18. another blight on the Low Country
I hate what has happened to the Low Country. It was a much finer place 30 years ago, before the developers got their claws into it. I think that federal flood insurance is a major culprit, without it few would buy. A big fat gift to the earth rapist:grr:.

I go to my old stomping grounds and find houses, houses, houses.

Fools. One day the sea will come.

I didn't want to kick this post because maybe "trolls" will get on it.

But, thank you. We, Low Country Folks share a strong heritage. It's awful to see it trashed the way it has been by the "Developers" and "Special Interests" all in the name of "Jobs in Real Estate." :-(

thanks...

20. Hilton Head
I know what you're saying. About 20 years ago I took a new job that was on Hilton Head. I had always loved the Island, but within 2 years I left the job and the island. The "Sea Pines Nazis", as me and a few friends referred to the Sea Pines Security, where more obnoxious than regular police. I had a 4 year old daughter and certainly didn't want her growing up in that environment. Several of my snooty neighbors obviously looked down on me because I had to work for a living, instead of just looking over my stock portfolio. I enjoy going back to Hilton Head and Kiawah, but I would never live there again.
