Now that our summer visitors have mostly returned home I took the opportunity this week to make a foray into our beautiful new shopping center Freshfields. Boy was I surprised. I went to six different facilities in a two hour span and got all my "off-island" chores for this week done while saving a ton of money on gasoline.
First, I went to the cleaners ( used the drive thru, no less ) where the very nice lady personally put my clothes onto the hook in the back seat without me even having to get out of my car . Plus she gave me a 10% discount for paying cash in advance. I love a deal!
Second, I parked directly in front of Vincent's Drug Store where not only did they have all four of our prescriptions ready within two hours of calling them in, they recognized me as the husband of someone whose 5th prescription had just arrived and quickly filled it and saved me a separate trip. Well, I had heard about the soda fountain at Vincent's so I couldn't wait to actually sit at the counter like I did as a kid and order lunch. Unfortunately, my diet would not allow me to test the ice cream ( I have to say this because my wife will red this message ) but I had a delicious cheeseburger and potato salad served up by the friendly counter staff. Of course, I did have to put up with a twenty-something who proceeded to shout all of her personal problems at increasing volume into her cell phone next to my left ear. Everybody in the place was really getting upset, so waiting as long as I possibly could and instituting all the Southern manners my Mother taught me growing up here in Charleston, I slowly and simply put down my cheeseburger and extracting as much drama as I possibly could turned my pretty face directly into hers and without saying a word gave her my best parental death stare. Eventually even this airheaded young woman realized something was wrong and at least lowered her voice and moved to another location.
Third, I sauntered across the way to the gorgeous new "Southern Stlye Salon" where the receptionist Carol Yeager greeted me and introduced me to Johna Wood. Johna was so nice and laughed at all my jokes and did I say she gave me a great haircut for a ridiculously low price ( please don't tell her I said that, remember, I love a deal! ). My only "complaint" about Johna was that she being from Nebrasaka tried to tell me she did not remember the 1981 National Championship Game where, as you all know, Clemson trashed the Big Red One. See my hero Mr. Jim Stuckey over at the sales office for all the glorious details.
Fourth, I went across the street to see my old tennis buddy ( ok, nemesis ) Nat Malcolm in his and Linda's beautiful new bookstore, Indigo Books. They are great. Nat knows exactly what I like and had already busted my book budget within two minutes of my arrival with right on the mark suggestions which, of course, I purchased. Another great local couple running a wonderful Kiawah Island "institution".
Well, thus armed, my 5th stop was naturally Java Java. While I've consumed as much caffein as anybody at Starbucks from Seattle to New York, I much prefer the little locally owned coffe shop. Shock of shock, in-store wireless and a public terminal! So cool, too cool even for Little Ole Kiawah Island! While there, I was pleased to hear the owner say he was thinking of taking the entire month of January off. Great idea even tho it will mean I'll be back at Starbucks.
Which leads to my 6th stop: Pig Newton. Had I landed on another planet or was I really on Kiawah Island? Shades of Dragers in Menlo Park and Gene's Market in Saratoga, California. Except, of course, I got lost trying to find the Carnation creamer. This is why I don't shop for groceries, not my "bag". Get it?
So what is all this about, other than a chance for me to get your attention, Dear Reader which I hope I have done. Why do I want your attention? Well, in these trying times ( Katrina, Terrorists, taxes, etc. ) I for one feel damn lucky ( & proud ) to be living on Kiawah Island. I hope you do too. Thanks for reading this.
