Poll shows Herseth ahead of Diedrich
But only by 4 percent margin

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SIOUX FALLS - Results of an independent public opinion poll show Rep. Stephanie Herseth, D-S.D., continues to lead Republican challenger Larry Diedrich, but by the narrowest margin since the campaign began in February.

Herseth leads Diedrich 48 percent to 44 percent in the poll conducted for the Argus Leader newspaper and KELO Television, both of Sioux Falls. Terry Begay, a Libertarian candidate, garnered 1 percent of the responses.

Mason-Dixon Polling and Research of Washington, D.C., conducted the poll last Tuesday through Thursday. The telephone survey of 800 likely voters has a margin of error of 3.5 percent.

Seven percent of those questioned were undecided.

5. I live here in Sioux Falls and I see alot of yards that have
Stephanie Herseth signs but no Tom Daschle signs. I hope both of them win but if I had to put my money of one of them it would be Stephanie. She's intelligent, young, popular AND attractive. She is the only woman in the entire Democratic party in the Congress endorsed by the NRA. (not that that is a good thing)

2. Isn't this good news for Daschle?
I would tend to think if one is voting Herseth, they'll also vote TD.

3. Good news for Daschle?
Not necessarily. I have seen a lot of yards that have a John Thune sign in their yard along with a Stepahnie Herseth. To be honest, I think there are a lot of Democrats our there that aren't sure if they want to vote for TD. Of course, those people could be confused (but smart) republicans that can't stand Larry Diedrich.

4. 4 per cent!
Hey, compared with recent South Dakota results, why, it could be a landslide! (Compared with, for instance the June 1 special election where she one by 1.2%).

But let's keep working at it.
