House candidates tackle education in debate
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The role of the federal government in education was among the topics of a televised debate Thursday night between U.S. House candidates Stephanie Herseth and Larry Diedrich.

Diedrich, a Republican, and Herseth, a Democrat, are running to fill the position left vacant when former U.S. Rep. Bill Janklow resigned in January.

During a one-hour debate they answered questions submitted by the public on issues ranging from gas prices to Social Security.

On education, the candidates agreed that when the federal government passes legislation such as the No Child Left Behind measure, it also should make sure funding is available to meet requirements contained in the law.
