Letter to a Phil Valentine show listener.
My friend, whom I used to date, is a successful business woman in Nashville. She is a perfect hedonist and alot of fun BUT she is anti-immigration. I mean radical.
She has started listening to hate radio and invited me to a rally which I refused. I couldn't go out with her again and certainly not to one of Phil's rallies!
Hey, I'm a boy toy with principles dammit!
She challenged me to back up my position.
I put together a packet of info and included a letter to give to her.
Here it is:

Dear XXXX,

You probably thought I had given up on researching the immigration issue we discussed. I don’t blame you. It was easy to find the information but it has been laying around for weeks as I wondered if I should even give it to you.
Your opinion on the subject is set. Nothing I say will change it.
As I read this material I saw the problem of welfare abuse by illegal immigrants.
It didn’t strike me as a major problem so it may be that Phil Valentine is merely looking for a whipping boy. It seems like the problem of shoplifting. It happens and you don’t go out of business. In fact, it seems that business is better than ever.
XXXX, you are a really smart person and you don’t seem to deny yourself anything that you want. You are in an enviable position and for the life of me I can’t see why it would bother you so much except that you listen to HATE RADIO.
Their only motivation is ratings and a paycheck. Social justice simply does not matter to them. They are exploiting peoples prejudice and fear to make a buck.
They play the victim while claiming to champion justice.
The talking heads really seem to believe that they are the modern equivalent of Horatio Alger and no one has had to help them. Right.
Our country was built on the premise that people should be left alone in their personal and political beliefs. We believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
We are fighting and dying right now for those rights are we not? So what if we lose a million here or there? That’s nothing compared to the BILLIONS being that Halliburton has overcharged us. Talk about welfare cheats!
I don’t recall that being discussed on Phil’s show.

1. valentine belongs on short wave with the rest of the nuts
we are a country of immigrants. unless she's cherokee, uh -- she is of immigrant lineage too.

talk to her about "transfer payments." how state colleges for (mostly) middle class children, are supported with her taxes. how roads are built with her taxes. how the nice parks we enjoy in nashville -- taxes. Titans? taxes.

the middle class benefits most from taxes -- only scraps are thrown to the truly needy jsut to keep them from becoming dangerous.

2. My position on illegal immigration has shifted.
I now see it as a security issue. Before, aside from perhaps being unfair to the legal immigrants who went to the trouble to go through the proper procedures, I had no problem with people who were simply trying to improve their positions in life. As was pointed out by brook, except for Native Americans, all of us had immigrant ancestors - and many of them the worst kind!

As for welfare abuses, how much can they abuse when they run the risk of being deported? A lot of people abuse welfare, and I support better enforcement so that more of the welfare spending can go to those who really need it.

Now, I still have no problem with people wanting to improve their prospects, but I think we need more secure borders to impede the number of potential terrorists coming into the country. We'll never be able to keep them all out, and I'm against racial profiling (after all, not all Arabs are Terrorists, and not all terrorists are Arabs), but I think we could do a better job.

Phil Valentine is still a liar and an idiot, regardless.
