To his credit, Zach Wamp did not follow others in his party in attacking Obama’s past cocaine use during the presidential campaign.

You’re about to learn the reason why.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Rep. Zach Wamp is looking to defuse the political impact of a past that included a cocaine addiction by emphasizing a “second chance at life” he received after he quit using drugs 25 years ago.

Wamp, a Chattanooga Republican who wants to run for governor in 2010 if former Senate Majority Leader Bill First stays out of the race, brought up his past early in a speech to a Republican gathering in Nashville last week.

He told the group he partied too much when he got to college and that he “crashed and almost burned.” But Wamp managed to kick his drug and alcohol habit and was elected to Congress about a decade later in 1994.

Wamp says he would use the governor’s office to advocate physical, mental and spiritual health - especially among Tennessee’s children.

1. HELL NO - I
CAN FORGIVE HIM USING DRUGS. I NEVER DID DRUGS. I WILL NOT VOTE FOR WAMP FOR GOVERNOR. WHY WOULD I VOTE FOR A GUY WHO SAID HEALTHCARE IS A PRIVILEDGE NOT A RIGHT. NO WAY. I WOULDN'T VOTE FOR FRIST EITHER. I DON'T WANT A DR FRIST TELLING PEOPLE WHO CAN OR CAN'T BE TAKEN OFF OF LIFE SUPPORT IF THE SPOUSE HAS A WISH ONE WAY OR OTHER. WE DON'T NEED MORE MORTAL GODS ON EARTH.

3. uneasy with Wamp campaigning for the "highest" office in the state

Do you feel that the 2010 Republican Tennessee gubernatorial candidate Zach Wamp should submit to an independent drug test and make his test results public...?

Come on now, if we compel Tennessee high school students to submit to random drug tests, should we not as Tennesseans expect that a reportedly admitted drug user would freely submit to a bona fide drug test before seeking his election as the Tennessee Republican Party 2010 gubernatorial primary candidate?

6. Without question. ALL of the candidates for all offices should be held to this standard.
It should also be required that they pass the many "mandatory tests for high school graduation", that they have forced upon the kids, too. Can't pass them, then you are not qualified to hold an office that makes numerous decisions which effect multitudes of lives. It seems only reasonable.

Wamp's drug use is certainly a concern, but it's his narrow-mindedness, & overblown sense of self-importance which troubles me most. I often wonder how often he embarrasses TN while in DC. I grew up in Chatta. at the same time as he & Corker. (Wamp a year younger than I & Corker 3 yrs my senior.) It amazes me that we emerged from the same community. IMHO, both of them are continuing embarrassments to the state. Corker more so w/his attack on the US auto industry.

2. Yea, Zach's just another example of a good ole' boy gone bad who's
saved from the clutches of Hell by Je$u$, and just in the nick time to run for high office.

I personally don't buy the fact that he's "drug free".

7. I missed his admitting to this. Thanks for posting.
When he first ran against Marilyn Lloyd he was getting down in the dirt and opposition research found this and a habit for passing bad checks. He agreed to back off so this remained just a rumor.

I wish he been blasted for it then.
