HERE'S THE STORY FROM THE NYT:

A legal defense fund established by Tom DeLay, the House majority leader, has dramatically expanded its fund-raising effort in recent months, taking in more than $250,000 since the indictment last fall of two his closest political operatives in Texas, according to Mr. DeLay's latest financial disclosure statements.

The list of recent donors includes dozens of Mr. DeLay's House Republican colleagues, including two lawmakers who were placed on the House ethics committee this year, and several of the nation's largest corporations and their executives.

Among the corporate donors to the defense fund is Bacardi U.S.A., the Florida-based rum maker, which has also been indicted in the Texas investigation, and Reliant Energy, another major contributor to a Texas political action committee formed by Mr. DeLay that is the focus of the criminal inquiry. Groups seeking an overhaul of Congressional ethics rules have long complained that companies might seek the favor of powerful lawmakers by contributing to their legal defense funds.
...
A spokesman for Mr. DeLay, Dan Allen, said there was no conflict of interest for the majority leader in accepting donations for his legal fees from large companies or from House colleagues. The contributions, Mr. Allen said, "were an acknowledgement that Congressman DeLay is a fixture within the conservative movement and has been a very effective leader, which makes him an inviting target for liberals and Democrat."

1. Reliant Energy
Funding frivolous "environmental" law suits against wind turbines.

Running "Broadband Over The Powerlines" trials - deadly for Community "Low Power FM" and "Ham Radio" and some Public Service/Emergency Service bands.

6. Reliant Energy
Bought a bunch of old power plants and are counting as part of their business model for the Pukes to keep in power so they can avoid having to spend any money bringing them up to spec for environmental controls.

7. Here's the text of the message I sent:
Dear Ms. Slavin and Mr. Barber:

I cancelled my Reliant Energy consumer electric service this morning, and on its quarterly anniversary at the end of this month, I will be trading out of my mutual fund that holds Reliant stock, and I thought it would be important to let you know why I made those decisions.

I learned yesterday that Reliant had made a contribution to Tom DeLay’s legal defense fund. As a customer and stockholder (albeit one of the smallest), and despite your spokesperson Pat Hammond’s comments that new Reliant executive management will be “conducting its business with integrity and putting some of the matters from the past behind”, I find that decision to be untenable as regards continuing my business with your company.

It’s not important that you respond, as my choices have and will be finalised, but you might consider giving my concerns a wider audience with those who will be responsible for making political contributions on behalf of Reliant Energy, Inc. in the future.

Regards,

(PDiddie)

10. I went with Gexa
9.6 cents per kilowatt hour, as opposed to the .12 I was paying Reliant.

anarchy started a thread today about TXU, which apparently outsources its call center.

11. What's the best way to evaluate a power company?
Is there an on-line tool or thrid party site where you can get objective comparisons?

How do you even know who's out there?

(I admit that I haven't looked into it, as you can tell...I'm vampiring off of your research. And making up verbs like 'vampiring'.)

Take that as far as you like (meaning you can switch right away if you so choose). That's where I found the Gexa folks.

I have no research about the company's backgrounds that hasn't already been shared on DU. Reliant has an abominable record that I first learned about reading Greg Palast's "Best Democracy Money Can Buy". I should have changed a long time ago. Here's another link about that:

http://www.gregpalast.com/detail.cfm?artid=80&row=1

Note that Reliant and TXU each gave over $600,000 to the GOP during the 2000 Bush campaign.

Eliminating those two didn't leave me many choices; Gexa and one other, Green Mountain something-or-other.

14. It feels more like piggybacking, brotha
and it ain't no thang either way.

Sharing information is what this site is so good for (in my humble O). I've been grateful many times for things you and others have posted here and just never got around to saying so.

So now I'm saying so.

We need to go see a ballgame next month....
