Help me find an Uber-Liberal Christian church in FtW
Background: I'd never go to church if not for the wife's insistance. We are moving there in August for my new position on the TCU faculty. I need to beat her to the punch and find a church, before she finds one for us that I'll never be able to stand.

Preferences:

Brief weekly services (<= 1 hour)
Informal setting
Non-traditional music (i.e., no organs and harps) and no mandatory singing
Absolutely no fire-and-brimstone
Non-denominational highly preferred

Caveat: Cannot be a UU church; that's not Christian enough to "count" or Catholic (they're "evil")

Thanks in advance.

Can

1. How about the Unity Church of Ft. Worth?
When we lived there, they let us meet to lead the Dances of Universal Peace. They have a Peace Pole in their meditation garden, and I always got a good vibe from their services (and they never tried to 'convert' me).

2. You don't mean Ft. Worth, Texas do you?
You're kidding -- right? The buckle on the Bible belt? Where the west begins? I was raised in Ft. Worth, and I can tell you, you're out of luck on that one.

3. I do indeed mean Ft. Worth, TX
We led the Dances of Universal Peace every Friday there in '90 and '91 (until we moved to Arkansas). There are Sufis in the DFW area and there are classes/Dances that are presented there.

7. Yes there is a Unity church and it is about a mile from my house,
however I found my liberal heart's home at First United Methodist Church.

I would advise avoiding Churches of Christ (the other kind, not UCC), Southern Baptists, and most non denominationals around here, with maybe Unity as an exception. Some Presby congregations are pretty liberal and some Lutherans.

Around here the Methodists and United Churchesof Christ are the top choices for liberal theology.

4. Though this sounds appealing
I probably need to find something a little more "mainstream" in name at least. The ideal thing would be to find something that sounds like "conservative" but acts like liberal.

I appreciate the help, though...can

12. Hi, Can!
I've checked out the website of Yellowdog's church, and it sounds really great...unfortunately, I haven't made it to any services, yet! I'm trying to convince my own husband to go! Here's the web address:

http://www.fumcftw.org/

If "Methodist" doesn't sound conservative enough, maybe your wife will be impressed with the atmosphere and location; It's an old, really beautiful building right square in downtown Fort Worth, which is an awesome place.

15. Can, did you read reply # 6?
from Yellowdog? She mentions two other Methodist churches besides First United Methodist in downtown. Downtown is awesome, but I wanted to point these out to you. One is the Genesis United Methodist Church on Hulen, and the other is in Burleson. Since I know where you will be living, I just wanted to let you know that both of these are quite convenient from our neighborhoods, but especially Genesis; it's less than ten minutes (probably closer to five) away! Burleson is great, too. It's south of us, beyond Crowley. It might be more like fifteen to twenty minutes away. We do a lot of our shopping and eating there.

5. Try the UCC
Have you tried the United Church of Christ? They're perhaps the most liberal church in mainline Christianity that I can think off. They fully accept homosexuality, in fact they ran ads about it on tv that a lot of networks were unwilling to air.

Here's their church in Fort Worth

They have two services and usually chruches will keep the traditional music in the early service. I'm not sure how long the services last. I don't live in Fort Worth so I don't know of any churches first hand, I just thought the UCC was worth a look.

6. First United Methodist Church, downtown Fort Worth
Edited on Mon Mar-28-05 12:32 AM by yellowdogintexas
My church, so OK I'm partial.

Theologically liberal; intellectual and well educated pastors
formal and informal services
active and involved adult Sunday School Classes
excellent children's and youth programs
excellent choral music programs

ENORMOUS contributions to the local community in volunteer hours, as well as food bank, clothing bank, infant formula program, back to school clothing program, Christmas and Lenten lunches for homeless, financial support for children from the homeless shelters to have a safe day care during the daytime

No hellfire and brimstone, thank you very much. And even if you don't want an organ, well you just oughta hear ours. I'm just sayin'.

website

Of course I will tell you to come check us out and when you do, let me know ahead of time....I'll meet you.

Also recommended: Genesis UMC on South Hulen, pastored by a former associate at FUMC ...Jim Connor, who is a very forward thinking, lively and innovative man. Any church he pastors will be "outside the box"..he is a great guy.

Another of our associates is being moved to First UMC Burleson and they are getting an absolute JEWEL! Mike Marshall ...who will be missed . We are getting a new associate to replace him, but I have not met him yet.

I also concur regarding University Christian Church. Good liberal Denomination and also this particular congregation.
To be fair: their website:
http://www.universitychristianchurch.org/templates/cusucc/default.asp?id=24656

I know where the Unity Church is, but I wondered if it was as liberal as I have heard other Unity Congregations are?

11. A Friend attends the Unity church FtWorth
She is lesbian, and has found them to be a supportive and inclusive church.

I've also heard good things about First United Methodist.

Welcome to Fort Worth, Can o Beans! I'm a grad student at TCU. It's a great town.

13. Wow, Yellowdog!
Both of those churches, the one on Hulen and the one in Burleson are reasonably close to me; I've wondered about them, but had no idea how liberal they might be...thanks for the tip!

Also, I don't know if Can o' Beans remembers talking to me, but he's going to be living very close to where I live; both churches would be very convenient for him, too.

There's another Methodist Church I was wondering about, but I can't think of the name right this second; It's on Sycamore School Road, near the intersection with McCart. The other day I drove by it and their sign caught my eye. It said: God needs spiritual fruits, not religious nuts". I thought that was pretty cool, and rather liberal sounding!

16. Frog, I will let you go to Mike's church or Jim's church but you
have to promise to visit mine at least once (after we have actually met face to face of course) before you commit!!!!

LOL

Seriously, both those guys are top notch. I know the other church you mentioned but know nothing about the minister, however I could do some snooping if you like.

9. Isn't there a Quaker meetinghouse in FW?
Might be worth checking out - Rep. Lon Burnam is a Quaker.

10. There is a small Quaker group in Ft Worth ..
they do not have a meeting house. Would have to check where they are meeting now but if the Unitarians are not Christian enough i doubt this flavor of Quaker will pass the wife's Christian test.
