Texas Freedom NetworkWhy is H.B. 2479 a bad bill for Texas?This slush fund could allow public dollars to go to fringe religious providers like the
Roloff Homes, rather than faith-based groups that play by the rules and observe state licensing standards.
Creating a slush fund where public dollars are awarded at the sole discretion of the governor could allow groups to avoid important regulations and licensing standards. It would open the door to the government playing religious favorites.
Texas lawmakers have already reversed the state’s involvement with the Faith-Based Initiative because of its troubled record, rolling back the state’s Alternative Accreditation program in 2001. There are two distinctly unsavory aspects to this bill:
1) It allows the Governor sole discretion on which organizations receive funds -- which means that religious organizations must toe the political line to receive monies;
2) And, there is a single clause in the bill that allows anyone from anywhere to donate funds to this special slush fund without limits -- so, PACs can earmark monies that go directly to buying religious support.
