Q and A with Nick Lampson (DeLay's opponent)
courtesy Kuffner:

Q. Why didn't you run against Tom DeLay in 2004? Did you think that you had a better chance in CD 2 than in CD 22? And if so, why do you think you can win in CD 22 in 2006?

A. In 2004, I was asked to run in the 2nd, 14th, and 22nd Congressional districts by folks living in each. Frankly, there were strong cases made for running in each of them. I ultimately felt a responsibility to the place where I'd started in politics - the new 2nd district.

Polling before the 2004 race suggested I would do very well in the 22nd district. I think my moderate record and consensus-building approach are the right fit in District 22 at this time, which, by the way, continues to become more favorable territory for Democrats. I'm not a grandstander, not pushing a personal or party agenda. I really believe this is about public service, and going to work every day for the folks who send me there.

1. That's the ticket Nick - grassroots

"One thing I plan to do is spend more time introducing myself to parts of the district that don't know me."

2. Morrison
Morrison would have been the better choice. Apparently the Democratic machine pushed him aside. Without support he can't run. I think he'd have a much better chance to beat Delay.

3. I agree Morrison would have been a better choice
But he graciously stepped out of the race. I believe that Richard's family situation is more important to him. He has a fifth child on the way and a mother undergoing a serious medical condition. Richard did the right thing and put his family first.

So now that Richard Morrison is not an option, we have to get behind Nick Lampson. Lampson may learn a trick or two from the hardworking people that Richard had on his campaign.

4. OK I'll bite
Please explain why you think Morrison would have made a better candidate than Lampson. This is not an attempt to start an argument, after all, the point is moot. I would just like the opportunity to here your reasoning.

Thanx CD

5. Well I didn't say Morrison would be a better candidate than Nick
I said I supported Morrison first. He's the one who got in a fight that everyone told win was un-winnable, and he put a whole lot of grassroots effort into his race. Morrison managed to come away with 41 percent of the vote in repuke leaning district. For a brand new candidate, with very little name recognition he did an absolute fantastic job. I liked Morrison because he was a fighter getting into that race because it was the right thing to do. Morrison got in to challenge DeLay, because Delay is an utterly corrupt politician and the people of Dist 22 deserve better.

Nick having run and won a Congressional race was always going to have that advantage over Richard in a primary. That and having a wider base of financial support, make Nick a candidate more likely to win. Richard Morrison however, used the grassroots support he built to get that 41 percent and that's nothing to laugh at.

I don't live in Dist 22, so it's not my call at all. But I did send Richard Morrison a small contribution because I admired the man for standing up, and I'll support Nick Lampson as well.

7. Thank you,
My problem is inadequate information. I appreciate you sharing yours with me.

I used to like Lampson when I lived in Beaumont, but much of that was because he was the best choice at the time. I will, no doubt, send a token contribution to the Democratic nominee for that same reason.

What do you know about the possible opponent to Lampson, Mr. Quan?

8. The only thing I know is that Gordon Quan is a Houston City Councilman
I've seen blog posts that talk about him building a good support base among Asian Americans, like Vo did for the TX House district, but I know nothing else about him.

Here is his old web site for City Council.

10. Morrison
Made a good run before the news about Delay. Lampson is too much of a wishy washy dem I've been told. Morrison would have started out better and been able to finish off Delay better.

It's opinion granted, but I think I'd believe it.

9. I've also heard some rumors about why he suddenly decided
to step out. Could be some *things* that the pugs were going to make an issue of.

6. Are we to push much of the right to choose aside with Lampson?
He voted for the "partial birth abortion" (one of the Orwellian terms we should not use, and he did in the interview with him I listened to last night), he voted against federal funding of allowing poor women to choose, and I'm not sure how he stands on the global gag order.

But he was quick to state that he believes women have the right to choose. Hmm.
