Texans can now ship wine legally
Woo hoo!

New law is meant to help wine industry, which is growing rapidly in the state.

Texans are permitted for the first time to have wine shipped to their homes from anywhere in the country, because of a bill signed into law this week by Gov. Rick Perry.

Although the state's wine drinkers benefit, Senate Bill 877 by Sen. Frank Madla, D-San Antonio, was crafted to give a boost to the state's growing wine industry. The number of vineyards in Texas has more than doubled to 100 in the past four years, and their sales and tourism generated an estimated $170 million last year, according to the Texas Wine Marketing Research Institute at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

"This bill provides a wonderful opportunity to the consumer and the Texas wine industry," said Madeleine Manigold, owner of Spicewood Vineyards. "It's a credit to the industry that we were united on the bill this time."

1. Does this mean I can join the wine of the month club??
Seriously though wouldn't most of the wine shipped be from out of state? How would that help the Texas wine business?

2. Actually, there are a lot of tourists in the hill country
and a lot of little wineries and I'm sure they would all like to ship their wine IN state, let alone out of state.

But, yeah, we can join wine of the month club now, or order wine over the internet. YEAH!

6. You are right
There are some very good wineries down in the Hill Country. While it was possible to have wine truck shipped, the charges were very prohibitive.

This is a good thing.

3. Great news for teens also
How would one make sure that those ordering the wine are of age? I think there are quite a few parties being planned among the younger set even as we post.
