I'd seriously consider it. I'm sure the mosquitos are no where near as big or as many as Houston. ;-)

15. Glad to hear you have friends here - that should help
...get acclimated and familiar with the area.

It's no Eden, but compared to where I grew up (SoCal) the traffic is not as bad as L.A.; the pollution not as bad as L.A.; and the heat not as bad as the desert. (Humidity is another thing altogether - but you pretty much live in air conditioning anyway.)

Pluses: Cost of living; lots of trees; friendly people; fascinating history; Pacifica radio station; Democratic mayor; cultural diversity; food and restaurants; sports (if that's your thing).

Negatives: Humidity; high concentration of strident wingnuts (it truly is a Democratic Underground in Texas); traffic; air quality; road construction (last three sound like most large American cities, yes?)

Looking forward to having you here!

24. You may have to tell us..since we're not familiar with the area.
Maybe something like breakfast or lunch at the Mosquito Cafe or The Sunflower Cafe or something?

I LOVE really splurging on breakfast when I'm on vacation, but since you'll be working the whole time we're there (Monday thru Thursday), tell us what works best for you.

And let's all hang out a bit at the convention! I just booked my room at the Hilton for my friend and I yesterday.

17. I'm jealous. I miss Houston!
Lived in Austin for about 10 years now, but my heart is still in my hometown. You won't hear many people say they'd rather be in Houston than Austin, but I like being in the minority. Be sure to hit all the museums and the zoo for me!:)

25. Houston is a great place to live
I have been here for 20+ years and really like the town. One key thing to consider is that Al Gore carried Harris County over Bush in 2000. We just elected a Democratic Mayor (Bill White) who was a member of the Clinton administration.

The business environment is much more open than Dallas. Dallas is far more conservative than Houston.

What part of town will you be working in. Houston has a number of nice communities to look at and some nice schools.

Have fun. You will enjoy Houston.

26. thanks Gothmog, glad to see so many DU'ers like Houston
Well I thought we were going to be looking at homes in the NW area, but I guess I messed that up. According to the info. my hubby has given me it's Montgomery Co....not sure if we're going to do the planned community thing or get a ranch like "W". Only kidding, but we are considering moving a little bit out.

Not sure of location yet for my husband's office, many satelites in Houston and always the possibility of working at home...since most of job will be travel.

Let me know what you think of Montgomery Co., if you know anything? Thanks. :)

We'll be in town on Wednesday am next week after taking the overnight from Lima. Must say, I'm really looking forward to getting back to the USA.

27. Montgomery County is VERY Republican.
It's also a strange sort of county, with the wealth of The Woodlands and surrounding areas and the poverty of some of the rural areas surrounding. It's a bit too far out from Houston for me, but it's got some nice areas.

If I were sentenced to life in Houston (;-)) I'd rather live in the city itself rather than the 'burbs.

33. Montgomery County is more conservative than Harris County
The Woodlands is one of the white flight type suburbs and is more conservative than the rest of Houston. The Woodlands does have some nice schools from what I can tell. Conroe is a weird little city or town. I have been there for scout camp a number of times.

The Woodland area is really close to IAH (I refuse to call if Bush airport) and to the area where there is an annual Renaissance Festival in the fall.

Have fun. You will enjoy Houston.

35. Hi!
Houston is OK....I really didn't like it at first, but it's growin' on me (note how I said "growin'", i need to quit that!).

Huge city....really crappy mass-transit compared to other big cities......but lots of GREAT food!

There is a reason why Houston is one of the fattest cities.
For lunch or dinner I highly recommend Istanbul Grill in Rice Village (if you like Turkish food) There's lots of great Mexican restaurants too....

Oh...and also...car insurance is ridiculous here. Plan to spend a lot.

I'm in Montgomery County. We moved here from NJ and love it. People love to complain about the heat, but it's no big deal. The quality of life is wonderful. And you'll find some non repugs scattered about.

If we can help in any way we'd be happy to.

41. We could use a little help here in Montgomery County
This is north of Houston where many ultraconservatives live in The Woodlands (aka Stepford). It is SOO white with lots of transplanted, transient others. My son makes friends and their parents get transferred a LOT.

Politically, it is a repug wasteland. Democrats don't bother to run locally here much at all.

We used to have a lot more woods than we have now. Developers are ripping out all the old growth forests to put in subdivisions on large lots.

Schools are pretty standard. I found that many of the schoolteachers are quite liberal, excuse me, that's quietly liberal.

Most of the Stepford residents work for biotech or oil-related companies. Bus service to downtown is great from Montgomery County.

I'd move inside the loop if I didn't have kids, and down toward Galveston if I had kids. Or maybe to Galveston, period, and commute in for the night life.
