Erin Brockovich coming to Midlothian
to press the concrete plants on their pollution abatement, which is poor at best. I love my area but one thing we do have are numerous concrete plants that produce large of amounts of contaminants that are burned off as part of the production process. Officially, as far as I know, the TNRCC here in Texas states that the plants are within regulations. I doubt this to be completely true.

Others don't trust the plants or the TNRCC either, so Erin Brockovich is coming to town! See here for details. Erin Brockovich is coming to town And you bet that I plan on attending!

1. Give us a report on her visit Maestro
We need all the help we can get fighting for the environment in Texas.

And by the way TNRCC (Train-wreck) was conveniently renamed TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) Our nickname for this industry captured agency is "toxic".

It's still as ineffective as it was before, but now with a fresh new name.

2. Thanks. I didn't know about the name change
but you're right. It doesn't matter. It is a p.o.s. department with no real power.

3. Brockovich...
Seems she is adding some clout to already existing group's plans to protest and attend this meeting. Both the Midlothian Family Network and Downwinders at Risk are planning to attend the meeting in Waxahachie.

Brockovich and the Downwinders are primarily concerned with the pollution and burning of toxic waste, while the Midlothian Family Network expands their concerns to other items as well such as "Schools. Roads. Taxes. Parks. Community Services. Public Health Concerns. Corporate Welfare. Leaders who ignore us." in their own words.

My wife and I both plan to attend this meeting.

6. Is it just for Midlothian residents, or can anyone go?
I'm in Dallas, and I was planning on going (since I'm on the mailing list for the TCEQ updates), but I don't want to intrude if there's not enough room.

public. Here is the info:

7:00pm
Midlothian Conference Center
1 Community Circle Dr.

I plan to go and ask for directions when I get there.

easy to find Midlothian, just go to google.

Ugly time of the day for those of us in North Dallas to head south!

"hazardous wastes alone, in 1995 it burned 260,800,000 pounds"

"permit...77,694,329 pounds of air pollution annually"

"largest point sources for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) air pollution, an ingredient of ozone pollution. In 1995 "

"ingredient in Ozone pollution, emitting 10,860,200 pounds in 1995"

"TXI's Midlothian cement plant was responsible for a full 26% of all the major industrial air pollution in the Dallas-Ft. Worth region in 1995. It was responsible for 42% of the region's major industrial Sulfur Dioxide pollution, 22% of the region's major industrial Nitrogen Oxide pollution, 19% of the region's major industrial particulate matterpollution, 13% of the region's major industrial Carbon Monoxide pollution"

I am afraid to imagine what they might be doing in the current ultra deregulatory climate.
