HOUSTON (Reuters) - An explosion and fire occurred at the Formosa Plastics Corp. plant at Point Comfort, Texas, city officials said on Thursday.

The blast occurred on Thursday afternoon and the resulting fire was reported contained, although officials at Point Comfort City Hall had no other information on the problem.

The company, which did not immediately return a call, reports on its Web site that the plant employed 2,000 workers as of 2002 and produces polyethylene, polypropylene and other products.

Point Comfort is on the central Texas coast, about halfway between Corpus Christi and Galveston.

I heard about it on KPFA originally, the lady was saying that it looked HUGE, and that it was a highly toxic plant.

At least six injured in South Texas plant explosion

POINT COMFORT, Texas — At least six people were injured Thursday when an explosion and fire sent a pillar of black smoke into the sky at a South Texas plastics plant that makes PVC and vinyl for floor and wall coverings.

Authorities closed nearby roads, including the Port Lavaca causeway, State Highway 35 and Farm-to-Market Road 1593 following the blast, which happened about 3:30 p.m. at the Formosa Plastics plant.

Calhoun County Commissioner Michael Balajka said crews were working to extinguish the fire, but he said it appeared no toxic materials had been released into the air. As a precaution, area residents were asked to shut off their air conditioners and stay inside.

Formosa spokesman Rob Thibault told Houston television station KTRK that it wasn't clear what was burning and that the facility uses many flammable materials.

"it appeared no toxic materials had been released"
How the heck would they know that, this quickly? Because animals aren't dying in their tracks? TCEQ I'm sure wasn't on the spot nor will they even investigate because they don't care. Let's see if OSHA comes up with something. I feel for these poor people. Burns are serious and painful injuries.
