Hey Texans!
You Texan Liberals are tougher than armadillos and I just wanted to say that I am proud of all of you and the stands you take there in the Lone Star State. It isn't easy to be progressive there. I know. I was born and raised there.

It's far easier to be "liberal" out here in California or up in New York or New England. Certainly, it takes guts to be progressive just about anywhere on our fair planet, but it takes true grit to be so in Texas. That's what you all have: true grit.

I'm sorry that some choose to give you a hard time about Texas. If anything, you folks are the real heroes standing your ground every day at work and at home. I admire you greatly.

Those that take gratutious digs at you Texans from their easy chairs sitting at their keyboards need to find the tallest ladder they can find so that they can climb up high enough to kiss your asses!

So, here's a heart-felt salute to all of you great guys and gals struggling deep in the heart of Texas for social, economic and environmental justice! I think you folks are just swell!

:hi:

1. Thanks
We're all a little discouraged today by the result of the Prop 2 vote.

Before that it was the World Series (well, for me and a few others) where the BS was near-constant about the nasty Astros having the Bushes behind home plate, how the team had no black players, yadda yadda yadda.

But we kicked some ass yesterday (locally, where the Houston mayor, a Democrat, won with 91% of the vote).

I can't stay mad at the Texas haters on this forum, though. They just don't realize there aren't all that many Freepers catching their vibe.

6. John Hope Franklin rules!
The best book ever written on the Reconstruction after the Civil War was written by John Hope Franklin. I read it when I was 15. I just re-read it two years ago at a rehab facility in Sugarland after my dad had stroke that later took his life.

I wish I could attend the event there in Houston in his honor. I am there in spirit. I am still forever his student.

And while I am here, let me salute an outstanding leader in the U.S. Congress that hails from Houston: Sheila Jackson Lee!

My daughter has some kind of parent's night at school and I'll have an out of town guest.

I love you folks! At my age and with my cholesterol levels, I can only dream of Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and cream gravy along with Fried Okra and a Texas Tall (Sweetened Tea). :hi:

;)

Thanks for your kind words. I'm lucky to work in (and live three miles from) the only county in the state to reject Proposition 2 so I don't have to be subjected to the daily crap that other liberals in the state have to deal with.

That said, there are times I dream of living someplace else! :(

Bigotry in all it's forms (Texan Haters for example) takes us all a step backward not forward.

I'm new to DU posting but have been inspired by many of the Texas DU......well....."Heroes" who work tirelessly to help right the wrongs in our State and our Country.

Edited for typo...

39. Greetings from Amarillo !
Where did you have your CFS ? I grew up here, moved to FL for umteen years, moved back about 3 years ago. See, there are even some libs in the pothandle ! Ya know what's funny - when I found out in 2nd grade that I was moving here from KS, I called it "armadillo." Which is funny, cause I never actually ate armadillo till I moved to FL. Oh, and welcome to DU!:hi:

You Texan Liberals are tougher than armadillos

Unfortunately, somtimes we get squished just as flat!

Why did the armadillo cross the road?

Answer: To show that it could be done

Like Armadillos we just keep clawing away.

Having lived in the most uber-progressive areas of the country before this, I can say that being a liberal in Texas is a whole different experience!

Sounds like you need to move back down here, cowboy. We can always use extra help. :)

It is not so bad! You get used to people looking at you real funny. . like an alien.

You don't mind when people don't get that you're not a Jesus freak .. kinda.

You get really tired of telling people that George W. was born in Connecticut, NOT Texas!

You get kind of used to your family being ashamed of you for being so liberal. They think I'm nuts anyway, so it's not a far stretch to go the distance.

Wow. Thanks a bunch. Progressive Texans are a true breed apart. I love them all too. :grouphug:

You wanna come back?

32. "George is the only man in Texas that wears argyle socks under his boots."
You are right, of course. He is not Texan, but Dan Rather and Bill Moyer and the late Barbara Jordan are Texan.

"George is the only man in Texas that wears argyle socks under his boots." That was the great Ann Richards delivering Molly Ivins' speech in 1992 at the NYC Democratic Convention (I was there.)

What is even more funny to me is that George W. Bush is the only "rancher" in the world who does not ride horses because he is afraid of them.

I'm too old to move back now. I will retire in the California desert.
