Cornyn Corruption Watch
From Sean Paul at The Agonist:

Former Christian Coalition director Ralph Reed claimed in a 2001 e-mail to a lobbyist that he choreographed John Cornyn's efforts as Texas attorney general to shut down an East Texas Indian tribe's casino.

San Antonio Express-News

Here's a question for my local paper, the Houston Chronicle: do you plan on investigating this and/or covering it yourselves or are you just going to rely on the wire reports?

So far, the Austin American Statesman has an identical wire story. Houston Chronicle, nada. Dallas Morning News, zip.

The lobbyist was Jack Abramoff, who is under federal investigation, along with his partner Michael Scanlon, on allegations of defrauding six Indian tribes of about $80 million between 2001 and 2004. The e-mail, along with about a dozen others, were released last week as part of the investigation...

In the Nov. 30, 2001, e-mail, Reed told Abramoff that 50 pastors led by Ed Young, of Second Baptist Church in Houston, would meet with Cornyn to urge him to shut down the Alabama-Coushatta tribe's casino near Livingston, Texas. He said Young would back up the request in writing.

"We have also choreographed Cornyn's response. The AG will state that the law is clear, talk about how much he wants to avoid repetition of El Paso and pledge to take swift action to enforce the law," Reed wrote. "He will also personally hand Ed Young a letter that commits him to take action in Livingston."

Cornyn, now a Republican U.S. senator, had filed a lawsuit in 1999 to shut down a casino operated by the Tigua tribe in El Paso, saying it violated the state's limited gambling laws. In 2002, federal courts shuttered the Tiguas' casino and Cornyn used that ruling to shut down the Alabama-Coushattas' casino.

You gotta go read the whole thing.

1. He is an major embarrassment to the species.
Has his office ever replied to a letter you sent? He is just another corrupt hypocritical RW zealot, now Ralph Reed is a special case.

2. I first wrote to Senator Box Turtle
during his campaign for the Senate in 2001, asking him to return Enron's cash.

Got a letter back from one his minions which said "John Cornyn has not accepted any Enron money for his Senate campaign". Of course, the donation was for his run for Texas Attorney General the previous year. I wrote back Staffer Sycophant and told him he was a duplicitous lickspittle for sending me a response like that.

Since then, I have written, called, and e-mailed a hundred times without one single acknowledgement of any kind.

This is the definition of taxation without representation.

It's not just that Crony-n is a sockpuppet for the religious zealots and the corporations. He's actually one of the leading advancers of the God/CEO/GOP agenda nationally. Every time they need a battle fought, whether it's absolving themselves of Abu Ghraib, saying nice things about Harriet Miers or Sam Alito, or whatever this week's dirty Bush job is that needs cleaning up, he's there with a pooper scooper and a smile. A Christian corporate soldier, hoping to have his loyalty rewarded with a Supreme Court seat one day.

Of all of the miserable Republicans in this state, John Cornyn is now the most dangerous. That's right; more than than DeLay, Rick Perry, KBH... worse than all of them.

Bill White is going to whip his ass in 2008, and I'm going to laugh about it loud enough for Senator Torture to hear me in D.C.

3. I'm glad to hear about Bill White
I had a similar experience, albeit without the reply to the staffer. I guess one answer is all they deign to offer. I will certainly do everything I can to remove him (provided I'm still here).

btw, I totally agree with your assessment of Cornyn.

4. Handwriting on the wall all along for “Senator water boy”
From the Online Newshour, 2002 Texas Senate Race
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/vote2002/races/tx_cornyn.html

Cornyn has promised Texas voters he would fight for the president's agenda, including 1 tax cuts, 2 welfare reform, and 3 religious-based programs. He also says he supports the 4 reduction of U.S. dependence on foreign energy supplies, 5 social security reform and 6 ending "frivolous" law suits.

Cornyn has supported the president's 7 war on terrorism, and has spoken in favor of 8 overthrowing Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Cornyn's strategy so far has been to paint his opponent Ron Kirk, the former mayor of Dallas, as an obstructionist controlled by liberal special interest groups from the East Coast that don't represent true 9 "Texas values."

Cornyn also accuses Kirk of not supporting the president's initiatives to 10 expand the war on terror to countries the president said were part of an "axis of evil," such as Iraq.

1. Tax CutsOn the backs of working, poor and elderly Americans who can least afford to do without.
2. Welfare reformto put more single mothers and kids on the street. Frees up more money for tax cuts.
3. reduction of U.S. dependence on foreign energy supplies“If you don’t have an oil well, get one. You’ll love doing business with KBR Iraq”. (New locations opening soon!)
4. Religious-based programsDemocracy and Christianity joined at the hip...tax free to boot. These new “assets” also come with evangelicals and buses to GOTV.
5. Social Security reformPrivatization to feed the coffers of more Neo-con Cronies.
6. ending “frivolous” law suitsCorporate America’s answer for minimization of corporate collateral damage.
7. War on terrorismstill waiting on that to really get started. Too many old scores to settle and Halliburton employees who need new shoes.
8. overthrowing Iraqi leader Saddam Husseininvasion of a sovereign country for oil and domination of the middle east.
9. Texas valueswe saw their version of this on Prop 2 voting earlier this week.
10. expand the war on terror to countries the president said were part of an "axis of evil," such as IraqPNAC’s anyone?

Thanks PDittie. This scumbag needs lots of "watching"

When speculation was happening regarding who dimson would nominate for the SC, Cornyn's name was mentioned. That scared the heck out of me!
Yep, repugs imploding, enjoy!

7. A little ’02 election stuff…for my own perspective.
Edited on Sun Nov-13-05 04:02 AM by Poet Lariat
The states election system is a travesty (well…only if one considers accuracy and verifiability important).
Wonder if the 76% Prop 2 landslide had the taps opened up just a little.
Nah…it’s gotta be the buses.

Republicans conspire to steal more elections in 2002

Republicans manipulate voting machines in Texas

”In Dallas, Texas,
a bastion of Republican strength where both Bush and Cheney lived for several years in the 1990s, machines used for early voting are marking votes made for Democratic Sen. Candidate Ron Kirk in the column of Republican John Cornyn. Dallas County Democrats have sued to suspend early voting. County election officials, who are all Republicans, blame mistakes on the calibration of the machines in the key Senate battle”.

Calibrations my ass. Part of my work entails calibration of complicated instrumentation and systems. Countin' aint complicated folks. Without a verified election next time, this article could just as easily be used again for the next senate race.....if Ron Kirk ran again of course.

edited to "bold" names because I can

9. Senator box turtle is corrupt
Just like the rest of this admin. No surprise. They will do anything for money. It's the only thing they value. That along with power, which brings them money.

How I wish we could speed up the Abramoff investigation and trial and get "cromag" Cornyn under oath.

In e-mails, consultant claims link to Cornyn
Cornyn, who has not been accused of any wrongdoing, has denied knowing Abramoff. He also has said he was unaware of Reed's work with Abramoff.

I want Cornyn to say that under oath, because I don't believe a word of it.

10. Whatever happed to CREW's Texas Public Information Act request?

CREW Files Texas Public Information Request Regarding US Senator Cornyn's Involvement With Indian Gaming Scandal
Cornyn Claims to Have Never Met GOP Activist Ralph Reed

Washington, D.C. – Earlier today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed Texas Public Information Act requests with both the Texas Office of the Attorney General and with the Texas Governor’s Office. CREW has asked the Attorney General’s Office for information regarding contacts between former Attorney General (now U.S. Senator) John Cornyn and Jack Abramoff, Michael Scanlon and Ralph Reed as well as for all documents related to the Tigua Tribe of El Paso, Texas. CREW also asked the Governor’s Office for information documents generated and received regarding the Tigua Tribe.

CREW filed its requests in response to a statement by Sen. John Cornyn that, while working to close down the Tigua’s Speaking Rock Casino, he never met with Ralph Reed, who had been paid by the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana to close down the Tigua’s casino. E-mail correspondence between Jack Abramoff and Ralph Reed, however, suggest otherwise.

14. More on Cornyn?
Don't know if you are aware of this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abramoff-Reed_Indian_Gambling_Scandal

Senator John Cornyn
(R-Texas) On November 12, 2001, Reed sent Abramoff an e-mail stating, "get me details so I can alert cornyn and let him know what we are doing to help him" . Similarly, on November 13, Reed wrote "I strongly suggest we start doing patch-throughs to perry and cornyn . We're getting killed on the phone." Also, on January 7, 2002, Reed sent Abramoff an e-mail stating "I think we should budget for an ataboy for cornyn" .

When John Cornyn ran for Senate, Abramoff contributed $1,000, the maximum amount legally allowed. Cornyn, who has spoken out against gambling, also received $6,250 in contributions from Las Vegas casino interests who oppose Indian gaming, some of which were made at the same time Cornyn was pushing to close the Tigua's casino.
