Is this legal in the State of Texas???
I have been researching the emails from the Indian Affairs hearings that Sen. McCain has been holding.

It is been very interesting seeing how the "Machine" works.

So far I am only on page 32 of 319 pages, when I came across something that piqued my curiosity.

Apparently, the Texas Christian Coalition would call people on their call sheets and would explain bills being voted on, and if the callee was pro-family (?) they would be patched through to their Representatives/Senators through the "Coalition".

My question therefore is: Is this legal?

It doesn't sound like it to me, but I am not an attorney!

Anyone care to enlighten me on Texas law?

1. That would be Federal Law
Concerning the actions of Non-profits. What is at risk is their tax-exempt status.

But also, IANAL, so take the above with the usual grain.

2. Even though the "Coalition" is based in Texas?
The "Christian Coalition for Texas" are part of Ralph Reed's PAC. This is all documented in the records I have been reading through.

They paid for mail outs, rallies at the Capitol, and phone solicitation and patch throughs.

I wouldn't think that a PAC could call someone and then patch that person directly into a government officials office. After further reading they were also patched directly into Gov. Perry's office as well!

Another interesting thing about the documents is that they contain how much money was exchanging hands. It boggles my mind.:eyes:

3. There may be additional laws
Because it is acting as an arm of the party, but the one I believe would definitely come into play is the IRS status as a non-profit.

4. How would one go about informing the IRS
or any other government official to investigate this issue?

I was hoping someone else would offer some advice or just some info into Texas law. But alas no one has bothered to respond  except for you Lithos.

I appreciate your response!

Since you are a mod, let me ask you a question about starting a thread.
How do you go about getting more people to respond to a thread?
Is there something I'm missing here?

5. I don't know about how to ask the IRS
My guess is they will not listen to anyone unless they have some political connection.

Don't know if I'm the best person to talk about how to get people to answer. One of the sad truths the mods commiserate with each other over is how the grey ghost seems to scare people off.

As for getting people to post inside a thread, about all you can do is ask. There are quite a few people here who I know are very knowledgable about laws affecting politics here in Texas, so I'm surprised that no one else at least jumped in to point out any resources you could use.

One which came to mind just now is the League of Women voters. They're probably the one of the best informed groups out there. You might try asking them.

6. Thx for the info
I'll try calling them next week to see what kind of response I get. Hopefully they will be able to direct me to someone who can answer some of the questions I posed here.

So the grey ghost reference, is that referring to mods?
