"Makes school finance look like a minor issue"(public hearing on football)
Edited on Sat Dec-10-05 12:38 PM by rainbow4321
Oh geez....with ALL the problems this state has, WHAT is a repuke going to hold public hearings about???? Fans not being able to get tickets to a football game:

After being slammed with phone calls and e-mails from brokenhearted Highland Park fans, state Rep. Dan Branch, R-Dallas, said Friday that he would hold public hearings on the "broken system" that allowed the Marshall coach to pick a tiny stadium that holds a fraction of the fans who would pay to see the game.

"It's outrageous that a state final game is being played in a stadium so small that it denies access to thousands of fans, families and friends," said Mr. Branch, who leads a House subcommittee charged with finding revenue sources for schools and whose district includes Highland Park High School.

Mr. Branch said he would make a recommendation for changes to the full House education committee next summer. One idea, he said, is for the University Interscholastic League to limit coaches' choices to major stadiums – such as the Astrodome, Texas Stadium or the Alamodome.

"This is a big deal," he said. "My phone has been ringing off the wall. This makes school finance look like a minor issue."

3. Ya know, if they had not agreed to a coin flip to decide on stadiums
then maybe they could be allowed a gripe or two..but all sides KNEW about the coin flip, agreed on it, and then the losing side wants to change the rules...and pull state lawmakers into it, hold public hearings, get laws changed. If the whole thing were reversed, does HP expect us to believe that they would cave in and let Marshall pick the stadium?
Bummer about the score but maybe the HP kids will learn a lesson that just because a district/person is used to bullying people <usually w/ $$>, they do sometimes have to follow the same rules as the rest of us no matter how much of a hissy fit is thrown....

The coaches for the Carroll-Lufkin and Highland Park-Marshall games couldn't find neutral game sites that were agreeable to both sides. One possible neutral site, with plenty of seating, would have been Baylor University's Floyd Casey Stadium. But the stadium in Waco, site of last year's Carroll-Lufkin state semifinal, is booked this weekend for a "Welcome Back the Troops" celebration.

So the respective coaches determined the sites by coin flip. Winning flips for Carroll and Highland Park would have meant playing at Texas Stadium. Wins for Lufkin and Marshall would have meant playing at stadiums in East Texas.

"We flip all the time,
and you have a 50-50 chance of having the game 12 miles from your place and a 50-50 chance of having it 12 miles from their place," Mr. Dodge said. "Unfortunately, there's not 60,000-seat stadiums all over the state of Texas."

4. From Marshall
I'm from Marshall and went to the game. I hated that Marshall lost, but even more that the only press for this game was because of the venue. It has always been understood here that if there is not a neutral site available, the team that wins the coin toss chooses the stadium. Coach Southern could have chosen our home stadium (Maverick stadium) but instead he chose Rose Stadium - a venue about halfway in between the two cities. No wonder our education system is lacking - priorities, priorities...

5. Come on, people!
I just don't get it.

My girlfriend and I are football fans, but what is it with Texas. We have been in this state over a year, and cannot understand the religious devotion to high school football. This actually gets priority over financing?

I don't get it.

7. There's no rational explanation, Ari.
It helps explain why Texans keep voting for the GOP morans, though. Because they are morans themselves.

And if Rick Perry continues to fail the students of Texas. then the Texans of the future will be even worse off intellectually.

Welcome to DU.
