Bell wins Democratic gubernatorial nomination (AP headline)

(snip)
AUSTIN — One-time congressman Chris Bell defeated former Texas Supreme Court justice Bob Gammage on Tuesday to become the Democrats' nominee to face Republican Gov. Rick Perry in the November general election.

Bell banked on his longer established campaign and some big-name Democrat endorsements, while Gammage — who jumped into the race only in December after a decade out of politics — hoped last-minute campaign work from local Democratic groups would help him.

After early returns were in, Bell had 61 percent of the vote, to Gammage's 30 percent. Rashad Jafer trailed with 9 percent.

Well, even though Bell was not my candidate of choice, I'll work my butt off to get him elected. Congratulations, Chris, let's get Perry in November!

1. I'll work for him, too, (if I can stay awake while thinking about him)
Sorry, one last dig. I'm not having a happy primary day so far. :-)

Now I'm a Bell man!

2. Well, I was a Bell man...then a Gammage man...now a Bell man again.
I was kind of hoping for a runoff so that Carole 4 Names and Kinky the Republican shitbag would be screwed. But, oh well...

7. I still say Strayhorn is the most appropriate name
if you get my drift...

I kind of like her, actually. Not enough to vote for her, but I'd pull for her over most Republicans.

3. Yep. My primary day is going to the dogs.
I will work for Bell.

Talked to a couple of people that did not vote in the primary so that they would be eligible to sign Kinky's ballot petition.

11. I was at his party tonight, along with PDittie, JohnCoby and Muse
I would have supported Gammage if it had gone the other way. I look forward to working with you GOPisEvil and Democrats across Texas to unseat Governor Goodhair and elect Chris Bell!

13. We had fun and Chris was excited!
I got to talk with Chris and he was obviously thrilled and energized by his bigger than expected win tonight. I think there will be a lot of positive momentum going forward from this night.

12. I'm a little worried
I was election judge for my precinct in the Woodlands and we had 8 democrats vote today and another dozen voted early.

The Republicans had 111 voters today and sixty something voted early.

Normally the percentages run more like 20/80 or 25/75 in a good election.

I'm afraid an awful lot of Democratic voters are holding out for Kinky. Even my own husband thought about it. They all think they've found the next great guy to have a beer with - and we know where that has gotten us so far.

Hate to be a downer, but we couldn't get people to understand what an ass Bush was, how in the world are we going to disabuse them of the thought that Kinky is Kool?

I was there, as was my new-voter 18 y.o. son.
Yes, as usual, I was also disappointed by the low turnout.:toast:

GOVERNOR'S RACE: DEMOCRAT BELL WINS A CRACK AT PERRY
STATE ROUNDUP
After winning primary, he likes way 'field is set'

AUSTIN - Former U.S. Rep. Chris Bell of Houston defeated former Texas Supreme Court justice Bob Gammage for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination Tuesday, while Gov. Rick Perry coasted to the Republican nomination against minor opposition.

With nearly half of the state's precincts reporting, Bell had about 63 percent of the vote, while Gammage had about 29 percent. Rashad Jafer, a Houston retail manager, trailed with about 8 percent.

"We now have a bigger mountain to climb," said Bell, who struggled with the other Democratic contenders to get attention against a Republican-dominated landscape.

"But the field is set in such a way we can easily win this," he added.
