I just got a call from the Heritage Alliance (recorded) telling me all about this big pile of money in Austin:

On April 17, 2006, the Comptroller estimated that the surplus is a whopping $8.2 billion , thanks largely to overpayment of sales taxes by Texas taxpayers. Allowing for new spending the state has already committed to, we can still use $6.86 billion of the surplus to buy down property taxes without creating any new taxes .

How in the hell could that possibly happen? Our property taxes here in north Tarrant County have more than doubled in the past seven years. Our sales tax rate is 8.25%; it, too, has inched steadily upward. Yet schools are having a bad time financially!

WTF?

in every conceivable measure of human well being there is. Uninsured children, drop outs, teen mothers, unwed mothers, single mothers, fundy dipshits per square foot, etc, etc. Wouldn't want to break out of that race to the bottom now would we?

There were a whole bunch of these weenies dressed in red demonstrating "It's our money, give it back!" running around the Capitol the other day when I was looking for johncoby2 & pdittie.
