But here's the hopeful part. As this reply says:

I have noticed something VERY interesting here. The response to this article has been overwhelmingly in favor of teaching evolution in schools, and the responses have been articulate, well-reasoned, and well informed. Why is it, if most of us support teaching science, that religious extremists still have so much control over what is taught in school? I think the answer may be that we need to get as angry and loud as they are.
