Hey, Texans. How does one declare they're a Dem so they can vote
in the primaries? I changed from Ind. to Dem. last year but recently got my voter registration card with no preference shown. Do you just go in and declare, and then get the 'D' stamped on your card?
I also want to know because my husband wants to vote in March also, for Obama, and this is pretty darned important.
Thanks!

1. There never is a preference shown in Texas

you just go vote in the primary you want to vote in and, along with some magic dust, you're automatically a card carrying member of that party because your voter registration card is stamped with the name of the party's primary you voted in. In some states you have to declare before the primary. The way you declare in Texas is to vote in a primary.

10. Except in our county
LOL. All the Sheriff candidates run on the Democratic ticket because although this town will NOT vote for a Democratic President, Senator or Representative at the national level (but will on the state level)...they will NOT vote for a republican sheriff.
So EVERYONE here votes at the Democratic Primary so they can pick the Sheriff.:silly:
No stamped cards needed.

2. They'll stamp your card when you go vote
Just to keep you from going across to the other side & voting in their primary that day. In 2010, should you be so inclined, you can vote in the Republican primary. :scared:

6. And, if you don't vote in either primary
you're considered an independent and you can sign a petition for some other party candidate to get on the ballot in the General Election.

7. Sometimes it's a good idea. In state house district 94 a lot of
Democrats voted in the Republican primary back in '06. We had a Democrat in Republican clothing running against Kent Grusendorf and she defeated him in the primary mostly because of all the cross overs. She votes with the Dems almost all the time although she ran as a Republican.

8. Yeah, but if you do that, you know people will smack you with it for years to come.
Basically if you're not ever planning on running for office, becoming a precinct chair, or otherwise being a party activist, then you're cool, but if you plan on doing any of that, and if you EVER are controversial in the party, you can bet your bottom dollar that SOMEONE will brand you "Not a real Democrat" if you have Republican primary voting history.

Just saying, people need to be aware. :D

9. 'Tis true. Steve Bush running for Joe Barton's office voted in
Republican primaries because he is an attorney and had definate preferances for local judges and there were no Democrats running down ticket. He explained that to the Dallas Morning News and got their endorsement for the Dem ticket.

FYI I think there will be some Dem candidates for judgeships in Tarrant County this year after all the success that Dallas County had.

14. In my county, having your card stamped is optional
The precinct chair retains a list of voters in the primary to use at the precinct convention, so it is not necessary to have your card stamped if you don't want to.

11. It's okay if I don't have my card right?
I mean, I already lost it, and I've never voted in a primary before. x( I have a driver's license with my current address.

12. I usually vote showing my DL, so that shouldn't be a problem
We just got our new cards a couple of weeks ago. I might use it this year.

Yeah, since I've moved I've voted and didn't use my card and it's not a problem.
