All Politics is Local-Ads/Letters in local papers
I live in a small county. Our one newspaper doesn't have letters to the editor, but the man who runs it says he'll print anything for money as long as the content is not illegal. From time to time, I have put display ads in the newspaper, including Bush Bait and Switch, Bush's Lies about WMD, etc.

We live so far out from DFW that most people have satellite and there sure isn't cable. If people get their news on what is going on from cable tv or the local news channels, no wonder they are confused about stuff like the clear distinction between Iraq and Al Qaida.

I believe that speaking up in local print media is a good way to attempt to counter the lies being dished out.

Wondering if you do this in your community and if so, what's been your experience?

1. I live in a small county, too.
Our biggest town has a little over 8,000 people.

I don't have satellite or cable. I can't get cable anyway, and I don't want satellite.

I get most of my news from print sources and the Internet.

I write many LTTE's. I seldom put them in my local weekly, but there is a newspaper a county over that has daily editions, and reaches a larger audience. I write guest columns once in a while, too.

The only way you can get your thoughts out there locally is to write as often as possible, and to make as much noise as possible.

I am surprised by how many people respond to me and agree with me. Of course, I get responses from the wingnut fundies, too, but I am convinced that they are a vocal minority.

Keep speaking up. You might make a few converts, or cause a few people to think. Also, if you can, make sure that people who think like you are registered to vote, and that they get to the polls.

2. Our local paper's owner/editor is a big fat Republican!
Ugh! He prints all sorts of garbage in favor of repubs and doesn't care what people think. He also has a Bible verse for the week and runs James Dobson's advice on child rearing column each week.
