Anyone know anything about buying in Mineral Wells?
Edited on Sat May-17-08 01:40 PM by haele
My brother and his family are being transferred from Boise in late June/July and they're looking for a place to buy. He's also looking at some aeronautics companies, he's got an FAA certification as a avionics tech and is currently working on "heads up" cockpit instrumentation displays for small planes. He's worked on Black Boxes in the past.
His wife is a RN who specializes in in-home care; I suspect that wouldn't be a problem.

Any help would be welcome.

1. I dated a guy at Lockheed
he was an electrical engineer who worked on fighter jets (if he told me more he would have to kill me).
That being said, I am not sure that they are hiring additional avionics techs at this time, but I do know that L-3 Integrated Systems (formerly Raytheon) hires them.

Good luck.

2. His company was bought out by one of Lockheed's subsidiaries there
His shop/work was being transferred to there from Boise in two months, but since he's with "the smaller company that was bought out" - even if his resume was a selling point for the contract/sale, as it were - he's a little leary about job security in the long run.
I'm looking more to the "networking" issues - he's a good democrat from Seattle (even though he was living and working in Montana and Idaho for the past 15 years) and Texas is a different mindset from what he's used to. Appparently, they're going to be bringing not only their 11 year old boy, but his 21 year old single-mom step-daughter, who will be looking for work also.

Just trying to get a feel for what he'll be moving in to. I'm pretty sure he's done work in the area previously, but it's different living somewhere than it is if you're just there for a month or so on a job.

3. Oh, lordy. From SEATTLE? He will hate it.
Small town Texas.
Hot.
Republican.
Way west of Ft. Worth, so a long way to civilization.
Life will revolve around the high school football team, so I hope the boy likes and is good at sports. High schools in these towns can be a bit difficult for a kid who is different or artistic.

That said, there's a cool lake out there, and the cost of living will be seriously low.

4. A couple of thoughts
There is a DU poster who lives in Mineral Wells - I remember a comment on the board they made that indicated as such. Don't remember their name though.

There is a town called Weatherford which halfway between MW and Ft. Worth. Weatherford is generally considered the Western edge of the Metroplex and is a fast growing town. It is not a far hop to some really good shopping areas on the West Side of Ft. Worth.

My wife's uncle lives in Mineral Wells (he's hard core Libertarian, so no help there) and I've some friends in Weatherford (non-political) so have spent some time out that way.
