The New York Times names Texas Hill Country #1 place to visit this summer.
Since I live there and rely in part on our tourist trade to pay my bills, I'm thrilled by this.

TEXAS HILL COUNTRY

Who needs Europe? The Texas Hill Country, west of Austin and north of San Antonio, might be the next best thing to crossing the Atlantic. The region is lush, colorful and, unlike much of the pancake-flat state, dotted with beautiful green hills that are evocative of Tuscany or the south of France. Moreover, the region is speckled with 22 wineries (www.texaswinetrail.com) that buzz with food and music festivals year round. And towns like Fredericksburg offer a taste of the Old World, with German-style biergartens and schnitzelhäuser.

I just wanted to share our state actually getting some good press for a change. :)

2. Only in the sun.
Find a shade tree and where it's a delightfully refreshing 110 degrees. :P

7. During the day you find some shade
At night, you go eat, drink, and listen to some wonderful music.

3. Please come to Texas. Spend your money.
But for God's sake, DO NOT MOVE TO AUSTIN. We're full. ;)

Texas - We're Cheaper Than France. :D

5. LOL!
You know if they'd just extend the commuter train to Burnet imagine the overflow of Austin immigrants the Hill Country could handle! They're already moving here and carpooling into Austin. My wee little flyspeck has more than tripled in size since 2000! :wow:

I love this! "Texas - We're Cheaper Than France." And we'll even smile while we take your money, too! :P

I'll be playing golf at Delaware Springs. :)

I can't believe people commute that far. :scared:

Edit - that's also 2 days after my 40th. Yikes.

4. lone star
is the name of a beer there, is that counted as one of the 22 wineries?

p.s. this area is UPWIND of Crawford so no worries about air pollution either.

6. Welcome to DU!
:hi:

Not sure about Lone Star Brewery (do they even still make that stuff?) but I wouldn't be surprised to see a movement to make Shiner Brewery the 23 "winery."

because more people will come. THere's enough non-Texans running around. Maybe we can build a wall at the Red River.

10. Of course there is a down side to this
I've been finding it much more difficult to find anywhere to go for vacation. It's getting too expensive to go anywhere outside the US with the falling dollar, and everything in the US is booked solid with foreign tourists. Even when you do find something, the rates are going up from the competition with foreign tourists.

11. Maybe spring and fall?
Edited on Wed Jun-11-08 06:07 PM by AchtungToddler
Summer, I couldn't recommend to anyone, personally. Although it is fascinating to me that the Hill Country is evidently several degrees cooler in summer than the DFW area. And if you're in a cold spring fed river, it can be downright tolerable.

What do you do for the tourist, LSDem, and where do the tourist tend to come from? Other states? Other countries? Or just other parts of Texas?
