1. Good resource
I hope this scenario doesn't turn out to be true:

Some of Ike's missing may have just washed away
By JUAN A. LOZANO and MONICA RHOR
Associated Press Writers

GALVESTON, Texas — The death toll from Hurricane Ike is remarkably low so far, considering that legions of people stayed behind as the storm obliterated row after row of homes along the Texas coast. But officials suspect there are more victims out there and say some might simply have been swept out to sea.

Exactly how many is anybody's guess, because authorities had no sure way to track those who defied evacuation orders. And the number of people reported missing after the storm, whose death toll stands at 17 in Texas, is fluctuating.

Search-and-rescue crews cleared out Wednesday after plucking survivors from Galveston and the devastated Bolivar Peninsula, and authorities are relying on Red Cross workers and beach patrols to run welfare checks on people named by anxious relatives.

3. Here's the latest on the missing
(at least, that I am aware of)

http://www.khou.com/news/local/stories/khou080918_tj_search_bodies_bolivar_ike.8e35ae67.html?npc

County judge: Bolivar's missing may never be found
Searches continue, no bodies found

...Yarbrough said a hotline set up by the county to track missing residents has created a list of 50 people considered missing. But he cautioned that some of those on the list have been found safe at shelters in other parts of the state.

...In the coming days, the search will expand to include the area known as Goat Island. The island is a small strip of land across the Intracoastal Waterway from the peninsula.

Yarbrough said there is a large debris field on that island and is the next logical place to search, but only after a game plan to do so safely can be worked out.

2. That's cool, thanks.
So much for the blackout eh? I am so sick of the tinfoil in GD.

I think it was yesterday that Frank Billingsley was in the helicopter and as he flew over Galveston streets, callers would call in ask ask him to zoom in on their houses. As far as I know, he wasn't shot down or "disappeared" for it.

4. Did he really?
That's great. I have a co-worker who is still evacuated. He knows his house looks fine outside -- it's the inside he's worried about.

I know that there have been problems and that thousands are still without power, but I think Houston (and the metro) response to this has been outstanding. Granted, it's all inconvenient and stressful, but our people have been on top of it all. I've heard nothing but praise for Bill White. In fact, the only complaints I've heard are FEMA-related.

Hope you're well. :)
