Ft Worth Star-Telegram 12/18/08Former Dallas Mayor Kirk expected to be named to trade rep position in Obama CabinetBy MARIA RECIO
WASHINGTON — Former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk, initially a front-runner for transportation secretary, has opted to be U.S. trade representative in the Obama administration, sources said.
The announcement of the Cabinet-level position could come as soon as today in Chicago, where President-elect Barack Obama has scheduled a morning news conference.
The prestigious position, which comes with the title of ambassador, would make Kirk, an Obama confidant, one of the highest-profile African-Americans on the international stage.
Kirk, reached by e-mail, declined to comment. Last week, he confirmed to the Star-Telegram that he was being vetted for transportation secretary.
Finally someone from Texas may get an appointment in the Obama administration!
Good for Ron Kirk!
