Central Texas voters will fill two slots on the Austin-based 3rd Court of Appeals in the Nov. 2 election. We recommend that they elect Diane Henson, an Austin attorney, and re-elect Justice Jan Patterson.
The 3rd Court hears all civil and criminal appeals (except death penalty sentences) from a 24-county area that includes Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop, Caldwell and Llano. Because state government is headquartered in Austin, the 3rd Court handles many cases of statewide significance.
Henson, 49, is a veteran Austin trial lawyer with extensive courtroom experience in civil cases, but she's also a former federal prosecutor. And she has taught at the University of Texas and St. Mary's University law schools.

In the other race, Patterson, 56, a Democrat, is running for re-election against a Republican, Bill Green, 48, who has worked for years as a briefing attorney for the judges on the Court of Criminal Appeals, the Texas Supreme Court and the 3rd Court itself
