Texas Rep. Betty Brown Apologizes For Saying Asians Should Simplify Their Names
Texas Rep. Betty Brown Apologizes For Saying Asians Should Simplify Their Names

April 11, 2009 02:18 PM EST | AP

AUSTIN, Texas — A Texas lawmaker under fire for saying that Asian-American voters should adopt names that are "easier for Americans" has apologized for her remarks.

State Rep. Betty Brown, R-Terrell, issued an apology Thursday for the comments made during a House Elections Committee hearing on April 7.

Brown said the remark came during a conversation on the difficulty of translating names and that she was referring to transliteration issues when she asked a representative of the Organization of Chinese Americans whether Asian-Americans could adopt names that "we could deal with more readily here."

Ramey Ko, the representative, had testified that people of Asian descent have problems voting because they sometimes list legal names that had been transliterated in addition to common English names on their driver's licenses or other identification.

Brown said she was not asking Ko to change his name.

New York City Councilman John C. Liu, who along with the Texas Democratic party had called on Brown to apologize, said in a statement that the apology was "a fair first step," but didn't go far enough. Liu said Brown's comments during the exchange with Ko went beyond the concept of transliteration.

4. too little too late
Didn't she resist apologizing for a few days? Why would it be any more sincere now? I'm sure it has nothing to do with the phone calls, letters, and e-mails she's been getting, right?

5. Ramey Ko on KXAN and SNL skit
Watch the video - it has the SNL skit.

Karl-Thomas Musselman's BOR diary 4/12/09
Ramey Ko Reacts to Rep. Betty Brown on KXAN

This is a fantastic interview done by KXAN's Jenny Hoff with Ramey Ko in reaction to Rep. Betty's Brown's remarks about Asian American's adopting "easier names" in relation to his testimony regarding the Voter ID bills.

Be sure to watch the last minute of Ko's response- it's solid.

No kidding, Ramey nails it!

The last comment went omething like this:
"...the name change exchange was not as disturbing as when she used the words "you and your citizens" and then said "make it easier for Americans". That's when the warning flags were raised for me. They don't even think the people being affected by this legislation are American citizens with the right to vote."

Way to go Ramey!

7. To lawmaker who can't appreciate chop suey: phooey!

To lawmaker who can't appreciate chop suey: phooey!

We can be pretty sure that when state. Rep. Betty Brown from Terrell , east of Dallas, orders Chinese takeout, she gets the egg roll.

This is because she probably can't pronounce moo goo gai pan .

Brown is the one who, while discussing the voter ID bill last week, asked Ramey Ko , who represents the Organization of Chinese Americans , if Asian Americans could "adopt" names that "we could deal with more readily here." Like Skeeter. That would be my interpretation of it, anyway.

At this point, Brown's fortune cookie said, "You done screwed up, lady." And if Ko had been a wise guy, he would have told Brown to change her name to Chin.
