Texas Sen. Hutchison explains no vote on Sotomayor

McALLEN, Texas — U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas explained to a ballroom of Hispanic small business owners Friday that she would not vote to confirm the country's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice next week out of concern for protecting gun ownership rights.

(snip)
Hutchison's explanation that she could not approve anyone for the federal bench who left any doubt about their absolute support for the right to bear arms earned a smattering of applause during her speech to the Texas Association of Mexican-American Chambers of Commerce annual convention.

The tepid response was eclipsed when Hutchison noted that 30 percent of nominees she had submitted for federal judgeships were Hispanic.

(snip)
Alex Jimenez, chairman of TAMACC, said Hutchison's chances of attracting Hispanic votes in the gubernatorial contest will largely depend on how far she moves to the right to win what is expected to be a bruising primary with Perry.

"They'll be giving Democrats the best chance they've had in awhile," if they move hard right, especially if they spout anti-immigrant rhetoric, he said. TAMACC wants "people who are more balanced, more moderate."

1. What?? There's an infinite number of issues that can come before the SCOTUS
and she picks one, guns, to vote no??

She's pandering to the right while running for governor.

2. Yes it is lame but that's the one they have chosen
Both KBH and Cornyn. And yes she is pandering to the right so that the rabid Texas Rs in the primary don't make Sotomayor's confirmation an issue.

5. There may not be enough popcorn to go around next year
watching these Perry and KBH in the primary. The winner will be a bloody pulp by the time the primaries are over and will be extremely wounded going into November.

At this point I'm not so sure.

7. My view is that it's Bill White
At this point in our party re-building we need to have someone who can raise money and he's apparently the person who can do that. The national donors are only going to donate to someone who can raise money.

8. I thought he and Sharp were the jackals eying KBH's seat when she resigns
I wish we had a candidate for governor.

9. I thought so too
and frankly, although I won't vote for her, but I'm pulling for KBH in the primaries because because if the Democrat doesn't win (which unfortunately is likely), KBH is worlds better than Perry.

3. The NRA has something to do with it.
"The decision on how to vote on her confirmation was made more difficult in recent days for some Republicans and Democrats from conservative-leaning battleground states after the National Rifle Association, which has a loyal and politically active base of members, announced that a vote to confirm Sotomayor would count against senators in the group's annual candidate ratings. The NRA calls Sotomayor "hostile" to the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

Since the NRA's threat, no Republican or conservative Democrat has come out publicly to support Sotomayor."

The NRA has a big pull with conservatives.

4. She's a nothing
Edited on Sun Aug-02-09 07:32 PM by jeffweemsforRRC
Have you noticed her web site? standbykay.com?

Maybe some genius on her staff came up with that, but when I think of "standby," I think of folks who DON'T HAVE A SEAT ON THE PLANE! PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE A CLUE! PEOPLE WHO CERTAINLY DON'T LEAD, THEY STAND BY FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS!

She's a loss. Not a loser - losers win from time to time. She is a loss.

Beware the Texas Blue Tsunami!
