State senator linked to pyramid scheme

AUSTIN – Hundreds of people participated in a pyramid scheme in 2006 and 2007 at the urging of state Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, who said he thought the company involved was a legal marketing firm.

The company was shut down by the Federal Trade Commission.

Wentworth said his income tax returns for 2006 show he made less than $1,000 from the Internet digital music sales company BurnLounge, for which he was an "independent contractor," the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News reported Friday.

In 2007, the FTC shut down BurnLounge with a federal lawsuit. It accused the company, its chief executive and its top three money-producing promoters of running a pyramid scheme. No criminal charges were brought in the case.

Well I might laugh at the stupidity of Wentworth except that hundreds of people lost money on this scheme. Maybe not on the size of a Madoff scheme, but same principal.

And by the way we do have a choice in Texas Senate district 25. We have a very good candidate in John Courage who is running against Wentworth. John made a run against Lamar Smith for Congress in 2006 before the re-re-re-districting that gave Lamer a 65% R leaning district.
